So my families annual pilgrimage to the beach is in less than a month and in preparation I want to start figuring out where the best places are to fish. We usually go to North Top Sail so I'm familiar with the fishing there but Kure is new to me. I'm going to purchase a beach pass for either Freeman Park or Ft.. Fischer. At this point I'm leaning towards Ft. Fischer because it seems more family friendly and closer to the house we rented. We'll be down there the 3rd week in July so from what I hear Freeman Park can get a little rowdy mid summer.

What do you guys know of the area and have any of you chartered a boat out of the area? May also do that if the finances allow.

Thanks in advance.

I'll be down there around that same time, and we always go out on Ft. Fisher at least one day. Freeman park gets rowdy. Everybody on Ft. fisher is either fishing or families enjoying a day at the beach. I did get to watch a guy trying to show off to some girls bury a f-350 one year.... that was interesting. It took two jeeps and a Toyota with winches, straps, and a hi-lift... whoa... about an hour to get him out. Let's just say the girls didn't look to impressed.

Ft. Fisher is youre best bet for fishing and just family beach time. The north end isnt much for fishing, mainly because of the partiers and all around crowds. The Ft. Fisher area is great, but be careful of the soft sand areas. plenty of people get stuck on the cross over. its really soft and stock will not make it if you are not cautious. Im out there all the time. lmk when you plan on being there and I will do my best to make it out to meet up with you or lend a hand if needed.

Well I accidentally posted and now I can't delete it and I have nothing of value to add.

So fishing is fun and don't get the JK on 40's stuck. And if you do take pictures.

I'm moving down to Kure at the end of this month. If you know where the kure park is up from the Pier, look for my jeep and say Hi. I'll ask around and see what and where they're biting closer to the time. But with my luck every time I visit they were either biting four days before I got there or they start when I leave. My brother has lived there for 6 years and I'm moving in.
Careful on the beach! (Sarcasm) Bunch of people were stuck last weekend. They never listen when I tell them to just air down...

I can't wait to have my jeep down there, I wanted it so bad last weekend to pull that quad cab Cummings out.

Surf fishing will probably be slow w the warm water in late July but you never know. Fishing early and late and rising tides has always been better for me in mid summer, but it looks like the rising tides are in the middle of the day and night at that time there.

I was kinda worried about this. I'll probably end up on a boat out in some deep water if I can. The surf fishing is more for my wife, kid, and nephew.

I would call several charters to find rates and what might be biting offshore the week your there. Bringing home a bunch of fresh fish for the freezer makes it worth the cost of the trip IMO. I think the FF access is open from 6:30am to 8:30pm but not positive. If they aren't biting well, or stealing bait, use some smaller hooks/bait and you'll probably catch some Pinfish, fun for the kids and they make great cutbait for bigger fish.

I love driving Ft.Fisher in my M38 but my narrow tires give her and me a work out.Didn't get stuck but next time I'll change to 31/10.5s and air them waaaay down.
Family has history down there. Two ancestors(Grandfather3rd and his brother) were captured there when the fort fell in jan. 1865. Their section of the fort is between the access drive and the aquarium.

I'll be down July 19-22. Hopefully do some fishing as well. Went last year for the first time to fort fisher and absolutely buried my 2500hd. Got to the crossover and lifted the throttle just a bit to figure out which way to go and it was done. I tried backing up and hitting it harder but it just caused more problems. When I finally gave up the front a arms were buried in the sand along with the rear axle tubes. I borrowed a shovel from a local that was watching me and dug for about 45 minutes. Also aired down to about 10 pounds. After that I backed right out and plowed on through. There was a dude fishing next to his tow truck watching me the entire time. When I took the shovel back to the local, the tow truck driver walked up and told me he woulda only charged 40$ to pull me out!!! Hope he's there this year, cause if I get stuck I'm not shoveling for 40.00 again!! Lol

If you get stuck this year, I'll get you out. But I'd start with the airing to ten before the cross over.

The surf on the ocean side at Ft. Fisher can get a bit rough for small children - has knocked me down before and I'm not a lightweight. Sound side has quiet water with hermit crabs kids love to play with. Fishing in summer for me is usually skates and blowfish, with an occasional shark. Good advice on tides above, but if out at night be aware the park hours changed a few years ago (no more midnight fishing by campfire). Check out http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/fofi/main.php

It's still the most natural area on the entire NC coast that you still get to wheel on, making it my favorite for nearly 30 years. Enjoy!

Man I was down there this past weekend just Chillin with the fam I aired down to 20 on stock Silverado 18s and 245s and never even felt like it was having any issues, now last month I was afraid to stop it was so loose. When the tide was out the ocean side tidal pools were awsome this time, my 7 yo stayed in them chasing minnows!! It wasn't crowded at all either we had bunches of room on either side of us.

Bringing this back up. I leave on Saturday. I added some fishing accessories to my hitch rack to helps with carrying stuff out on the beach. Any last minute pointers would be great.

I think I'm going to get a 7 day pass for Freeman just so if I want to go fishing at night I can. I'm going to get a year pass for Ft. Fisher.

I haven't heard of much going on with fishing. The wind looks like it should be good this weekend.
