Thinking about going to obx to do some beach driving this weekend. I think most decent driving starts nov. 1st. Thought about Ocracoke but it adds a lot of time to trip. Did rondanthe several years back, but pretty sure it was early nov. And they allowed more access. Suggestions?
 
Go up to corolla. There is just under 10 miles of beach to drive and you don't need a permit.
That and you might get to see some wild horses while you're there.

oops sorry. 10 miles. open all year round. People live back there and there are rental houses only assessable from the beach, so they cant restrict access. (yet)

I second the suggestion for Corolla. Lot's of beach driving and seeing the horses is a bonus. It's open year round.

My second fav is Oregon Inlet. Not as much beach to drive on, but a great spot to fish and enjoy the water.

There are also a few places to drive on the sound side if you head toward Hatteras
 
Brad, the beach is great, but this weekend is probably better suited to going camping in the mountains. ;)
 
I was in Corolla in April for a week with the family. We rented one of the houses on the dunes. That area is actually called Corova but people still call it Corolla. There are lots of back roads and lots of water crossings. There are a few year round residents but for the most part they are all rentals. You will run across some idiots trying to drive on the dunes with a crossover on summer tires fully inflated, but other than that it is a great time.
 
From North to South; Corova is nice, its 10 miles of beach but add in the 20 or so miles of roads off thw beach that go from mud to sand. Its fun.

Killdevil Hills and Nagshead open their beaches on October first to driving. KDH is free but nagshead is 25 for the season. You can get the permit at town hall or the tackle shops.

Down south is another story. I havnt been out ther sense (I call it closed the beaches) the permitting started. The access changes often and there isnt a long stretch to drive. More like drive over access, drive the beach for a few miles thrn turn around to wzit same access. They (bird freeks) broke up the beach so you cant just drive for miles and miles now.
The southern beaches also cost 50$ for a week pass or 120 for the year, which goes fron Jan 1 to Dec 31.

I would stick to carova and stay in Kill devil hills.
 
So Corova sounds good, probably pull jeep down on trailer. Hopefully find a place in kill devil hills. Can u camp on beach?
 
I'm not sure about Carova and it is patrolled by the sheriffs department. As for the other beaches, no.

As for the trailer, I don't think there is a problem to tow it all the way to the Corolla Food Lion. Hotels are about it, they are a bit cheaper now that its the off season.
