In a bit of a rut

So the wife and I were talking over the weekend about how our lives are currently going and what we want out of them.....
I was thinking about it today and really want us to have things that we do during the week, so that we aren't doing the same thing every night.
My wife complains that she is always tired (she works Mon-Thurs) off on Fridays (she is a pediatric dental assistant)
I come home and usually want to go do something.....I usually sit all day long at work and will go on walks at lunch if the weather permits.
But here lately, I have noticed that I feel groggy most of the time, I just feel out of energy and I know its because, over the last 4 years or so, we have not been active much.
We usually go out on the weekends and stay out late, but most of the time neither her or I can stay up late without being super tired the next day...Not 6-7 years ago, I could stay out all night, get 3 hours of sleep and get up and do it all over again.
I would like to find something that the wife and I can do weekly, like a class or sports class or something like that....I do not like to run at all, but we usually go on walks every night....

I feel that we are just in this funk where we want to get out and be apart of the world, we're just not sure on what to do.

Any suggestions on classes or weekly rituals to help get us out of the house and feel alive?

We have no kids and are young (25 and 26) and really have no excuse for going to bed at 9:30 every night and not going places and being too tired. I want to feel like I am living my life...not just working and coming home and not doing anything....

Have (or foster) kids..... you will soon realize exactly how groggy you can feel.

I used to stay up working on Jeep projects, welding stuff into the wee hours of the morning (probably explains why my welds always look like excrement), etc. Then I got married and had kids. I don't remember the last time I stayed up much past 10 and/or had more than one drink.

Anyway, I'd suggest bike riding. It can be more exercise than walking, not as rough on your body as running and you can still be side by side to have a talk, or get competitive with each other. There's lots of places around High Point to ride.

Talked to the wifey about bike riding too...thinking about this,

I know I'm going to get bashed here, but try crossfit. Lots of couples do it together and the women usually see better results quicker and get hooked. I have been working out the last few years at a typical gym lifting and just really started Crossfit in May and look and feel better than I have since I wrestled in high school. Also don't worry if you are out of shape now, you can scale all the workouts until you get stronger. The main setback is the cost. I workout in a garage gym, but most public gyms, or boxes as they are called, are around $100/mo.
There are also some douche bags that get to into it and have to dress up and crap, but that's the advantage of a hike gym. Lol. Good luck find something y'all can do together and have fun.

I'll toss out some off the wall ideas: become volunteers at a Homeless or Domestic Violence shelter. Visit lonely people in old folks homes or hospitals. Mentor a child.

^^. Volunteering is a great idea!

But if your looking for more one I one time with the wife what about riding bikes? Kayak? Learn disc golf? There may be a very free and very cool disc golf course within a short distance to your house and there's nothing wrong with a nice stroll through the woods chasing a disc.

- mountain biking
- road biking
- running
- lifting weights
- yoga (never done it, but think about it because I am extremely inflexible)
- buy a project car/truck/jeep off CL to work on at night after work
- start a home improvement project that would be fun like backyard landscaping
- have kids, lol, then you won't have time to be bored or do anything I listed above

..

Instead of going out and staying up late, get up early and go for a long hike up in the mountains. There are more benefits from doing that than you realize. Such as finding an isolated trail, and hey nobody is around but you and your wife.

Get a canoe or kayaks and hit some rivers to explore, enjoy nature, fish, camp or hike, camp the vast N.C. mountains or Uwharrie . Road trips to other remote regions/areas of N.C.; Road trip or airline travel the U.S. while you're still young and somewhat free; Key West, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Northern California etc.

What's wrong with going to be at 9:30?? I like sleep much more than the crap on TV, not like I'm getting anything done at that point in the night.

You'd be surprised how getting in to some better shape will change your overall attitude toward everything.

With winter rapidly approaching I'd find something indoor. Spin class, crossfit (take it easy to start), yoga. Try to find something that she really wants to do and something that you really want to do. Then go to each others thing. Or find something you both like and then something each of you like. Spending time apart is ok sometimes too.

I was in reasonably good shape in the spring. My wife took me to a yoga class and it seriously put me on my ass. It was hot yoga, but it was tough.

And, if you have no kids: travel.

I know you said you don't like running, and neither do I. I've always said I wouldn't run unless I was out of bullets, but my wife and I signed up for a Couch-to-5K last year (the 5K benefitted a mission trip), and it was great. It gave us both the same goal to work towards, and it was amazing after the first 2 weeks of being exhausted, we actually had more energy.
We quit running for awhile after the 5K, and now we are signed up to do the Charlotte Chosen 10-miler to benefit adoptions. So now, once again, it gives us the same goal to work towards. It gives us something to talk about and encourage each other with.
The key for us to keep doing something is to have a goal.

All really good ideas. I like the idea of taking a weekly class.
I would be good with yoga....maybe I could get in a class with all women....

that's all you need. planking with a kickstand

I would recommend splitting and stacking firewood at my house. It will be free, requires communication and teamwork, and you will see visible results while both endurance and strength training.

Or go ride some bikes.
