So I passed a Federal Wildlife Agent driving a Ford Raptor today. I'm pretty sure a regular F150 would have got the job done. And they wonder why our country is broke :shaking:

If that is the case, they should have sold it and bought a stock F150 work truck.

...key word is "federal". You should see the offshore boats they have in Florida.
 
Durham has the largest fleet maintenance site of any other municipality around here. Makes me absolutely sick to my stomach knowing probably 1/3 the population downtown lives below poverty level. Basically the only ones above the level probably are the ones driving the trucks.

Yep. They also have a ton of brand new Superdutys out there now too.
 
I work for a local county system and we just bought a new superduty last year. We were able to buy it on the Forest service bid and got it stupid cheap. Like 24k cheap. It's just a basic gas truck but it's perfect for us. It runs really well. It also has a push button rear locker!
 
I remember once having a county vehicle pull up to my property to inspect some work I was doing and he was driving a 4WD Superduty with permanent tags. I asked him if he ever did any inspections on new construction thus needing the 4WD, and he said no. He rarely ever carried anything more then a laptop and a clipboard with him. Sucking down 9-10 MPG is easy when the gub-ment pays for it.

I saw it rolling through Marion, so I have no idea where it came from. I would say its not from here, possibly involved with the wildfire that around here.

I figured if they bought it they probably got better deal than we could.....The brown collar man just can't catch a break!! I'll just keep my eye out for government auctions for Raptors, hahaha
 
Your probably right they have crews pulled from all over wnc and the south east. at least they are starting demobilization on it. alot of the state guys are getting screwed on getting called to that fire.

that's what I'd bet, or it was cheaper/easier to get as part of a much larger contract that was already buying 10,000 of them

My bet the cost of selling it, plus the low value they would get for it through the usual government sales, would make it not worth it.
Why go through all that trouble to net a lower end truck?

Not that it really justifies them having a Raptor, but like you said government contracts get vehicles MUCH cheaper than the public. We are getting a Tahoe for the FD and through the contract it is about 30k. A comparably equipped one is 60k MSRP for the public.

What really pisses me off about the government and fleet vehicles is the amount of vehicles that they buy/lease compared to what they use. Here is just one example.

At the same time its crazy how government funding works. You get a budget and don't use it all you only get part of that budget next year even if that is when you needed new vehicles its no longer available for the budget

I'm from Detroit originally and worked for a company that supplied just about all of the auto plants. One of our salesmen had a nice older BMW that he would drive on sales calls - until he started calling on auto plants. Whenever he would pull into the parking lot, they would tell him in no uncertain terms to "get that import piece of $hit" off the premises and park it down the street.

This was the early to mid 90's when Geo was just taken on by GM. He went and bought a beater Geo Prism and they would let him drive anywhere he wanted even though it was just a rebadged Toyota Corolla. The average Union shmoe didn't know that, they just recognized the brand name.

I'm surprised that government contracts allow for import cars - seems a bit "Un - American", but hey.... my wife's Toyota Sienna was assembled in Indiana, but my Dodge Caravan was built in Canada. Suck it, UAW.
 
I wonder if NC4x4 could get a contract with one of these automakers, and start cutting us some sweet deals? Since the state is cutting funding for Drivers Education, we could fill that spot.

Could he get one w/ the extra brake pedal on the passenger side?
It'd be fun to have that, then disable it, and take the wife out for a wild spin and watch her face when she presses it and it doesn't do anything :D
