Questions about a roll cage for a YJ?

1 Anybody local to High Point build them?
2 I am thinking about pulling the factory bar and starting from scratch. What do you guys think? I already have the factory bar sold.
3 Is there a big deal with losing leg room?
4 I know there is a huge range but what should I be looking to pay?

Pictures of what you guys have done would be helpful.

I am not an extreme rock crawler but I am looking to be protected if I do roll. Check the signature to see what I'm running. I need to have good access to the rear of the jeep b/c I take my kids wheeling with me sometimes. What else should I be asking?

Thanks
Guy

I have built one in a YJ, and and a few in CJ's, don't have pics of all of them, but here is what I have:

It is easy to build off the factory cage, and no reason not to in my opinion. My buddy has plenty of room in his YJ, and for more legroom the X-brace could be changed a little bit. If you don't have an X-brace on the B-hoop, legroom will be no problem at all.

Still needs some paint on the rear and a couple other places but this just got finished today.

I needed access to the back of the tub from the side and every now and again some headroom when the backseat is in when the Short Bus has more than one passenger. ;o)

Here's a cj cage off the factory rollbar, I can build you one like this or a whole new one. I'm working on a yj cage/backhalf right now.

The YJ factory cage is strong enough to build a cage off of. Just be sure to do frame tie ins if you go that route. I've heard (not positive though) that TJ frames aren't built as strong (crush zone type stuff- one time use) but i wouldn't swear to that.

Damn Joel, you hacked that dash a bit eh? :)

Next time just use a hole saw, its much cleaner...

Back on topic... I would also use the factory cage to build off of... Dan4Jeepin and I built one in is his TJ, and had to remove the rear cage due to his dovetail... We basically replicated the B-pillar anyhow... SO just use the stock stuff... It'll save alot of hassle and $ in the build...

Had to Hugh. I wasn't willing to cut the duct work since I still somewhat daily drive it and don't have a tow rig to stay warm in on the way home. ;)

Here is the one I built for my YJ using the existing bar.

I mean if you can find em for a good deal then yea, the cage joel has in the pics is just one of them weld in kits (well the front half at least) they are usually all setup the same and work aight. Most of em don't come with a backhalf addition so you make it how you want back there with your own tube. But yea if you can find it for a pretty good price goferit, it'll make it alot easier to install, basically just weld it all up once you get it.

Son, you need to think more often before you open your mouth. If you mean by weld in that I bought some sticks of tube from Andy that me and a buddy cut, bent, notched, and then welded in you would be correct. But since you weren't there I guess as usual you are talking out your ass. :shaking:

RARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

and ricky joel's cage wasn't a prefab weld in kit. they did it all themselves.

Rick,
Thats what I was thinking. Buy the front half and make the rear half. I will check prices both ways. I still plan on taking you up on the offer to help.
Thanks
Guy

Actually, my front half is a Poison Spyder. Awsome kit . I did not have my bender at the time or I would have made the whole cage. I am guessing I had approx 17' of tube in the back half.

lol chill man, just made a assumption cause it looks just like the prefab kits, thats why I assumed wrong, my bad

I was just trying to convey the fact that if you buy the prebent/notched/etc kits it saves alot of work/time.

So, 89, can you still run a top with that rear cage?
Yup, it installs, removes and folds down as normal.

Whats your opinioin on the poison spyder cages using 3/16ths for the bracket that comes down the front of the door/windshield pillar?

Edit: not 3/16ths, its more like 1/16th
