Ok, the short, long story. I have a (much) older Ramsey REP8000 winch. It's drawing waaayyy too many amps under a hard pull. Last saturday I had to winch up the ledge on the peckerwood connector (small TJ on 36's). The battery in the TJ is brand new and has 800 CCA if I recall. The alternator has never had any problems keeping things charged before, but while pulling up the ledge the voltmeter dropped to 9 and the winch stopped pulling. I had to sit there halfway up the ledge and wait for things to charge back up. I'm thinking the motor is a little tired and in need of a rebuild. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me. If I'm not, is there anywhere in Charlotte that will do this sort of work? TIA.
 
what size wire do you have?
You need to first check the connections to the battery and Ground. you may have a bad connection to either side. You should check for a voltage drop under a heavy load
To check the connection from the + on the the battery to the winch measure the voltage between the connection at the battery and the + connection at the Winch while pulling under a load. do the same from the - on the winch and the -terminal on the battery.

You Should not get any voltage reading. on either of these. If you do then you have a bad connection or need bigger wire. and are loosing Voltage to the winch motor.

Also What is your Amp Rating on your Alternator?
you can also check you connection from your alt to the battery the same way.
your battery also may not be strong enough for long pulls
 
if you find it is bad, blacks generator shop in york will rebuild it.

usually like $25 + parts
 
Upgrade the motor - see if the motor shop can add a grounding stud on the motor case for you to run some 2 gauge back to the battery. Helps a ton.

The wire I have is all 4 ga. All of the connections are new and securely connected. I'll double check to make sure, but I'm 90% sure they're solid. The alternator is a stock TJ alt on a jeep with A/C. I'm relatively sure it's sufficient since I've seen them perform better than mine. The battery is a Duralast Gold with 800CCA's and it's brand new as well. I made sure to get a new battery before my trip.

I'll look into this as the winch doesn't have a ground stud like that.
 
You need bigger wire.

holyshit!! i got my ramsey platinum 9000 rebuilt (had sand in it completely corroded) and it cost me 125 bucks!! thats sounds like a deal and a half

Plu parts can be the key there.
When they rebuilt my old S9000 it was ~$50 didnt need covers just motor gone through.

That was about 2-2.5 years ago.
