Zj motor into an xj

I believe so. There is a thread on cherokee forum where someone does this. If Im not mistaken they are exactly the same engine if they are the same year and whatnot.

99 and older XJ 4.0 will interchange with a ZJ 4.0.
00 and up XJ uses different motor mount bosses on the block.

Close. The 00-01 XJ still uses the same motor mount bosses as earlier XJs, but is a coil pack motor like the WJ. You are thinking TJ, they changed to the WJ style after 2000.

But you'll also run into problems with the 00-01 XJ motors because they are coil pack motors and a ZJ is a distributor motor. So if you are swapping into a 99 or earlier XJ, any ZJ motor will work.

Can Jody and blaze come up with a sticky with this info?

Ex:

If you have 91-95 YJ; motors from xx will swap in.

If you have 97-99 Tj, Xx motors will swap,

In other words a quick guide that Turns into a sticky, so that when people are looking for a motor, either buying or selling, they can see what fits their application?

Good idea. I'll put something together and post it in the general tech section.

I put a 97 ZJ motor in my 00 XJ. Had to run an adapter plate because of the different exhaust port heads vs my manifolds, cost me $100 from some guy on another forum who makes them. My coil pack is just sitting right on my plugs, have had zero issues. Drive the jeep on long distance trips with no worries.
