So I haven't used iTunes in a long time. I've always aquired my music in other ways and loaded it myself.

I just went to see how much iTunes wanted for the new Metallica album and found that you apparently don't buy albums on there anymore. I guess you pay a monthly fee to access music.

Anyone use this service to confirm? There no explanation, just this screenshot.

Don't understand that I buy songs and diff albums all the time.

I like iTunes as it's super easy to find and download a good clarity copy of
A song right now, and all are stored and backed up, and can share across multiple devices.

Can't do what iTunes offers on an android.

I'm not doing Apple Music though. I don't do streaming music.

We just buy everything directly through Amazon. By which I mean buy the albums. You can download the songs so you "own" them and still keep in in their cloud so it's accessible anywhere.

Wrong.
Google music does the same thing with the added benefit of listening on any computer by logging in without installing any shitty spyware software.

But like Dave mentioned Amazon Music through Prime is the shizit. Hundreds of thousands of albums completely free for Prime subscribers.

Yep.
This wasn't what I was referring to - I personally prefer to actually buy my music so I own it, and know I can use it anywhere even w/o internet access, on ANY device (meaning an old school MP3 player).
BUT - yes Amazon Prime Music is all you need. My wife has pretty much switched over to just that.
Fuck Apple (or Google)

The company pays for my phone and service. I'll take whatever they want to dole out.

Which is to say, you're stalling when you're supposed to be downloading Amazon Music and/or Google Play on your iThing.

I've been using Google Play for a while now, and love it. I tend to want to listen to some obscure shit, and they almost always have what I'm looking for. I saw a breakdown around Easter last year showing the difference in content between the major providers. Apple and Google were the two top, and both were far ahead of the others. Like orders of magnitude. I'll have to check into Prime's offerings again. Last time I looked, it was pretty disappointing and hard to navigate. I'd give it another chance, though. We're already paying for the service.

This is a valid point. Prime does not have super extensive content. Hasn''t bothered me (yet) since I buy the MP3s or even the CD (gasp).
Wife is more of a mainstreamer so it doesn't bother her. She's a big Beatles fan and got really excited when Prime finally got access to all their albums.

I absolutely LOVE Amazon Prime for the music. Only thing I like about Pandora better is that they have a setting that you can select whether you want explicit lyric selections or not. I wish I had that on Prime. I like to listen to all sorts of music - mostly Alternative stuff, and I'd like to have it playing when I'm working on stuff and not worry if my kid happens to wander by. I have even set it on Dave Matthews Band and depending on the algorithm, it may eventually send you to a "less family safe" band or song. I don't always like hearing Christian music - which is always safe, so I usually have to throw some headphones on if I want to jam out to some Disturbed or Five Finger Death Punch while wrenching on something.

Did not know this. I already have a prime account, I definitely try it out.

Good to know.

The last time I had an android was a few weeks with a Samsung s6. I didn't know of, or couldn't find a way to find and download high quality songs directly on the device. Had some other issues with Samsung and went back to an iPhone.

My android experience prior to that was long before google music.

More often than not, I'm in an area with poor cell coverage during the day, and will use airplane mode to conserve battery and still listen to music on my phone. This is why I've never done the streaming deal.

Glad to hear android is competing. I feel like iTunes is one of the reasons most people stuck with Apple stuff.

I'm still salty about having a 12 year old ipod mini that I ripped all my CD's to iTunes for, and I can't play them without a wifi connection from any other device. Can't load them to my phone because it's not the appropriate device. I have no idea where my ipod mini is at, so I can either listen to my computer at home...or I can listen to the 12 songs I bought from iTunes while I'm driving.

and this right there is why I never even started w/ iTunes BS.

Sadly, on a related note years ago I ripped all my CDs to .wma b/c at the time the quality per Kb was way better than MP3. Then later came to learn Android won't do .wma (being a Windows format) even though most handheld mp3 players would. Doh. Had to re-format which always results in loss.

We use the apple music service. We pay for the family plan. So we have several "family" members all pitching in together. You can use it to download physcial songs so you can listen without internet if you need to. Its the new direction technology has gone for the music industry and frankly i quite enjoy. A lot less cumbersome managing "borrowed" songs from questionable websites, or seriouslly denting your wallet just to get access to more than a few songs here and there.

I only buy "hardcopy" music.
Then put it on laptop and use a 3rd party program to load my ithingie.
One reason is my musical taste is so eclectic that 60% of what I have will never be on a mainstream music site.

Your tastes may differ from mine by genre, but you cant be any more obscure. I've been impressed with the catalog on Google Play. Pretty much anything that I can find on CD or LP anywhere has been available. Now your favorite local artist's last recording of their acoustic set from the coffee shop in Walkertown probably won't be there, but I think you'll be shocked at what you can find. Toss me an artist or two and I'll look.

Also, it provides a pretty seamless integration between your library and available online content.
