My father in law is looking for a tuner and I don't know alot about them.

Anybody want to explain the options?

If you're going to spend any money, a decent tuner with EFI live is really the only way to go. You can get the 5 position switch and have five different tunes. I think mine was around 550 from Diesel Addiction.

I should add he's just looking for some extra umph toeing and better mpg.

Truck is all stock

I've got anti-theft/no start, high idle, mileage tune, tow tune, and 100hp over stock. I have other mods also, but you can run these on a bone stock truck with no problems.

More or less, yeah. Same basic concept. I'm just not a fan of canned, generic tunes that come on the handheld tuners. You can get a lot more for your money this way. Kory Willis, Idaho Rob, Duramax Tuner, Diesel Addiction...lots of good tuners out there. You can read for weeks about who is "best"....you know how that goes.

So when he buys Efi live it'll come with tunes from different people?

For instance I had beans tunes on my ts chip on my psd

You just decide who you want to get it from and they'll sell you their stuff. To me, it's easier to do in person. ..they just plug it in, upload their tunes to your truck, install the switch, and you're done. Usually if you order it online, you have to buy a V2 which is a handheld device that you then use to upload the tunes yourself and you install your own switch. You can also do a single tune which would have no switch.

I have bought several, never cared for all 5 tunes, look up duramax tuners, Efi live single tune it’s calked a spade, I have run both the light tow tune and the heavy tow tune in several different trucks

The 5 position switch is useless if he is just looking for a little towing power, also you really can’t go past setting three without the transmisson starting to slip

I have a like new H&S Minimaxx race tuner I'd part with if you're looking for something like that. Shift on the fly tuning. Gauge display. DPF on or off tuning. $650 obo.

Most reputable tuners offer transmission safe tuning. The 5 speed Allisons will take about 100hp over stock and the 6 speeds can deal with about 120 or 130hp. That's also why I listed out what tunes mine has...there a lot of stuff you can do with them. The Spade isn't their single tune...it's an EFI AutoCal and it comes setup to use a DSP5 switch according to the information on their website. You purchase the tunes themselves for 400 bucks and the AutoCal is an additional 309 bucks and 40 for the switch. That's 799 bucks all together. You should be able to load the tunes individually, but you'd still have to buy the AutoCal and tunes.

That's also why I'd suggest finding someone local or just taking a drive to have someone load the tunes for you. Then you don't have to buy the extra stuff. They just load you up whatever tune/tunes you want and you go on about your business. If you DO buy tunes online or something like that, you do have to have an AutoCal or EFI Live V2 to load the tunes in to the truck via the OBDII port, so just keep that in mind.

I'm not pimping Diesel Addiction's stuff (although I do like my tuning), but here's what they offer, just for reference.

Single tune - $350
2 position switch installed with 2 tunes - $475
5 position switch installed with 5 tunes - $575

Again, this is all if you/he wanted to go with EFI Live style tuning. There are a bunch of different kinds of tuners out there. The H&S like mentioned above and Edge CTS are nice because the have a display panel and you can also use them to store, load, and switch between different tunes.

Where is diesel addiction located?

Also if he did 2 tunes would that be a switch?

I have a 08 as well, I've been running an old school quadzilla but wish I had spent the extra for EFIlive. He should definitely delete the dpf when he does the tune though. My truck has over 340k miles on it now with no problems.

Diesel Addiction is in Leland, which is right across the bridge from Wilmington. Might as well check out the battle ship and find a good place to eat if you're there!

Yes, two would be a switch.

I'll have to see what i can find closer as I doubt he will make that trip.

Surely there's someone not too far from you that can get you taken care of!

Just did some Googling. Carter Built Performance in Concord appears to be a dealer for Kory Willis (PPEI). You might give them a holler and see what they can do for you.

What's your location?

Stanley, NC 28164. If you're in the Belmont that's just west of Charlotte, I'm 15 minutes away and drive through there almost every day. I can also install the tuner for him. It has all the cables and manual.
