A nonwheeler friend has an older warn 8274 that is missing the remote and as he claims needs a new motor.

What is something like this worth? I don't want to rip him off nor do I want to over pay.

I know replacing the solenoid pack is common, but I don't have a clue how to test to see if what is there works.

What else should be looked at? Good resources for parts?

I bought my 8274 for $400 off this board and it needed nothing. That was about 13-14 yrs ago though. I think $250 is fair with no remote and a bad motor.

I bought a working one with remote and winch mount for $450.I think he is right about the $250.

I'd say $150 to $200 too. The "good" Warn motor replacement/upgrade is $200, new solenoids or a contactor is $50 to $100ish. That puts you at $450ish before figuring out a remote. Depending on the "friend" I might start at a bill and see what they say, but I'm a cheap asshole.

DB Electrical is local to me. They used to be the preferred rebuilder of electrical stuff around here. Now, they specialize in selling crap from China. The last straw for me was when I had them rebuild the starter for my CJ3A. I got home and put in on and the damn thing was turning backwards.

$100 seems like it should be fair for both parties. I'm not even sure it has a cable. I want rope anyway.

Thanks everyone for your 2 cents.
Gotta make sure the motor matches the spur gear. Some are splined, some are keyed.

Also, if you need a contactor and a controller, Warn sells a kit with both. That's what I put on one of ours. It came with all new power cables, too.

Link or part number for the kit?

Rope is stupid cheap these days. I found some with a 20,500 lb breaking strength for 100 bucks on amazon. Ya it’s not name brand but it’s a 1/4 of the cost I can break it a couple times and fix it for saving that much

I take that back. I bought them separately, but both the "new style" Warn stuff

I used this on my 8274:

Superwinch Replacement Solenoids 90-14452

trailhugger's new 8274 didn't come with a remote, and in-cab switches are a no-no with kids, so I went ahead and bought a matching set:

Amazon.com: WARN 83665 Truck Winch Control: Automotive

A bit more expensive that way, but hers needed all new power cables, including the motor leads. When I did the same thing on mine, I probably had another $30-40 in cables after I bought the contactor. The only thing I have yet to do is make a bracket to hold the Warn contactor. The one I got is for a 9.5XP, and it's intended to mount to the spool bolts. There isn't a similar means of attachment on the 8274.

I have been told that the Warn contactor is better/safer than the Superwinch version, because it has a set of contacts to energize the pack, then a second set to select direction, but the Superwinch version just selects direction and goes. Whether or not that's true I have no idea.

Other folks may have decent luck with solenoids, but I think they suck. Based on Warn's recent offerings, it looks like they might agree.

Since yall were talking about it...what's an 8274 worth that's in working order with the remote and good wire rope? It'd basically be a bolt on and roll thing...perhaps some oil/grease, but otherwise fully functional.

I've got one on a Warn Classic bumper on my dad's old K10 and have been planning on putting it on my K30, but haven't decided if it's enough winch to do the job. More than likely it is, but I've always thought an M12000 would be a better match.

Think you guys are lowballing brand new they are roughly 2 grand with metal cable. I would, think a good used one with everything working should be around 800-1200

8274 =/= 8274-50
Both are great, but the old ones aren't worth as much. I've bought and sold a couple in working condition in the $400-500 range.

$500-$600

That's sorta along the lines of what I was thinking.
