'Exotic' Game Animals/Game Ranches

@Loganwayne you ever eaten Moose? You will more than likely have 600-1000lbs of animal to get out of the woods and process. Once it’s processed it ain’t hardly fit to eat. Unless it’s ground into burger with beef fat even the burger sucks for everything. The only thing that I could stand to eat was the tenderloin cooked rare anything past that was like eating an old work boot. The one I shot in AK back in the day worked me to death getting it out of the woods and cost way to much to process for the meat quality. Caribou is the way to go for filling the freezer IMO.

Ya I’ve had both. From what I’ve been told Maine moose are like eating a deer that’s been corn feed compared to eating a mountain deer. Either way the meat would be split between 4 of us, who ever gets a tag has to list a additional shooter. So there will be at least two people with guns but 4 of us going to help scout clean and dress out. We are going to split meat and cost of tag and trip 4 ways who ever gets tag if he gets a bull tag gets to keep the mount

in all honesty what are you wanting to hunt? Are you wanting something for the trophy or the meat or both? Elk are found all threw the west, some states have a ton and getting a tag is easier, if your not looking for a massive bull (you'd need 16ft ceiling for a shoulder mount anyways) your gonna pay out the ass and have to enter a lottery draw. if you want a bull but doesn't have to be a huge bull their are plenty of states that you could make it happen on public land and have a good chance of getting a permit on your first year in the lottery. Some states have a lottery for certain areas, but also have a general state draw that the tag would be good anywhere in the state except special permit areas (area where the massive bulls would be) additionally some have "management tags" these are easier to get but are usually for a cow in a certain area but also have a high chance of success because the tag was issued in an area with high population density.
If you want a Buffalo do some research there are several herds in the US that are "wild" some are on private land, Indian reservations, or free range on public lands. These herds are managed and animals are taken from these herds every year to hold the population at a steady level.

either of these options might take a year or two or five to get setup and get a tag and dont guarantee success. but on the other hand id rather do that then hunt a farm, you can also get a tag for a pronghorn just about everywhere they live out west over the counter, so if you get a tag for an elk in an area where they are also or close by id get a tag for one and if you bag an elk early you can switch up and hunt them with rest of your time. thats the plan with going to Maine and moose hunting if we get a moose we've got our bird dogs and we will start grouse hunting.

The Elk and Pronghorn at the same time is a great idea. Its been about 10 years since i was in Wyoming and I'd love to go back and hunt there. (At the time I was planning on moving there to be a Peace Officer after college)

I'm hearing that bow and muzzleloader tags are the easiest to get for Elk and the best weather since it's early in the season. Never done either, but I'm not opposed to learning muzzle loading.

I'm fairly new to hunting, grew up in a competitive shooting home but not much of a hunting one. I've bagged 5 deer in the last 7 years and that is the extent of my hunting. But it's something I want to get more into.

Trophy hunting - meh sort of. I'm not opposed to it at all, but I'm also not interested in pushing myself to that level of effort and dedication or cost to get the huge ones. Props to guys who spend weeks hunting the big one, but I'm more of a 'if I see it - it dies' guy. Because i'd rather slay something than nothing. I'm content with average or below game animals.

More into it for the occasional fun and experience.

Muzzleloaders now are extremely accurate if you get a decent gun you’ll be good out to 200-300 yards

I just want to go to @ramjo 's place with my cmr-30 for crow Target practice.

Anytime....you know the way! I'll throw in a couple free ground hog tags.

@Atla.....buddy killed this bruiser like 200 yards from my property this year. If you can figure out how to coax them over to my land you won't have to spend all that money at one the erotic ranches...

Edit: forgot to add the picture....doh!?

For the record, when somebody says "exotic game ranch" my mind automatically assumes something a lot less "family friendly" than hunting animals. Maybe that's just me.

I'm thinking we need to stock Buffalo at your place and let people shoot them for twice what they cost to buy!

If I ever went to an erotic ranch...my head would be the one that ends up on the wall...

An erotic ranch is where its at! Just chop up and snort some Viagra pills and enjoy!

;)

After a few weeks of research...

I've got a hunt set up in Wyoming early-October for a few days to pop a couple pronghorns. Through some old Wyoming contacts I had long forgotten about(glad they recalled me!), I found a guy with a 1200+ acre ranch that includes 300 acres of timber, backed up against a 3000+ acre BLM area near Devils Tower in the Black Hills. He charges a daily access fee to hunt his property and access to the BLM area. And it comes with free lodging in their guest house. He allows a handful of hunters a year. No guided hunts, just suggestions based on his observations as to where to go.

The area has a 100% drawing rate with 0 points and high success rates for harvest. Apparently it has little public access to the BLM areas, so it's not heavily hunted which helps with the drawing and success. Should be a good start to hunting out west.

Put in for a Moose tag in Maine today. Doing a similar plan with a buddy of mine. I'm 75% hoping I just get a bonus point this year, because I don't want to plan TWO hunts. But... I'd make it work compared to waiting a decade or more for another chance.

Do you guys put in for multiple chances? With 4 of you, it wouldn't be to bad doing 10 chances each.

I did 2 or 3 ever year we did it. I put in for the antlerless, any moose and then a bull only. You have a better chance at either sex and antlerless. Don’t forget you get to add a person that is allowed to use your tag, aka 2 of you get to carry a gun but the second hunter has to stay with you. But works well everyone I know that has hunted moose said they shot twice to take it down faster. One shot will do it but that are so big if it’s not perfect it can take a few minutes for their lungs to fill with blood. 4 holes does it faster than 2.

I saw that option and didn't know what to make of it. I'll make sure I do that next time. It's a good idea.

If it's what you want to do, do it. It's your $ and something you want to do, screw everyone else. But when you share pics please don't say hunt, say harvest so you don't get pounded into the internet ground by all the keyboard cowboys! Or save another year and do the real thing.

Haha. I've been educated now. I watched a few youtube videos on game ranches and it was pretty disgusting. One in particular was some guys 'harvesting' a Ram... in the back of a truck and shooting it at the other end of a road. It was pretty pitiful.

I had much higher hopes for what a Game Ranch would entail. :(

But I'm headed WEST now!
