Sure, but it did make for a good entertaining instructional video.

I actually helped a guy do something like this several years ago. We used a bigger log and wrapped the strap around it, and rolled it on its end, kind of acting like a come-along.
The key is you still have to have a tree, or massive rock or something to use as the anchor point
