I'm overdue for getting my boys on a quad. Looking at the name brands (Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Polaris), but wanting folks $0.02 with kids that ride.

My two boys (7 and 4 in December) have never ridden but typically don't have a problem learning how to ride/drive new things at all. I'm going to buy one now for them to share and thinking it probably won't be too long before getting another (because....brothers). I was thinking of starting them on a 50cc for them to learn on with the expectation of my oldest likely outgrowing it pretty quick and then my youngest will ride it a few years thereafter and then get my older son on a 90cc.

So, for folks with the kids that ride, what's your thoughts on that? Since I'm likely going to end up with a 90cc anyways, does it make more sense to just go straight to a 90? One benefit I see with the 50s is they're have a throttle governor (adjuster screw) and a kill switch mounted at the rear w/ a pull string for folks to walk behind and teach (and yank out in a "ahhh shit..." situation).

Aaaaaannnnndddddd GO!

Oh, and thank in advance...

(and if anybody knows where I could find a good deal on said quads above...do tell)

My brother had a Suzuki quad sport 80 2-stroke. Thing was a blast. It was belt drive and had a set screw to limit how much throttle you could give it. I was always partial to wheels and rode a Honda XR90 until I quit riding.

I am in the same boat... I picked up a Honda 90 for a good deal. So we will see how well it will work soon enough.
I've always ridden Hondas but damn folks are proud of them! Ideally I'd like to find one for around the $500 mark but would ultimately like to stay under $1k. Honda's are damn near impossible to find under a grand (at least from my experience)

Agreed. That is why I picked up the 90. I tried to talk my friend out of his ATC70, but he wont budge.

After looking around for a used atv at a decent price, that wasnt beat up; I was almost ready to get a small dirt bike and put training wheels on it. They seem to be had for better deals.

My search started with go-carts.... that was a quick waste of time.

I know this is a dirtbike and not a 4 wheeler but my neighbor has this Suzuki JR 50.

The Honda will hold the best resale, period. Any of the four you mentioned will be good, though. You can limit the throttle on ANYTHING with some minimal effort. Same goes for kill switch, even remote kill. A 90 is big for a 4 year old, but every kid is different. Remember, also, little kids turn into big kids, fast. Like one of the other responses mentioned, people are ALWAYS looking for a used 50, so you wont be stuck with it. I sold my boys 50 and 70 Hondas in a day about 15 years ago. With todays media, it wouldnt take an hour. Take all these things into consideration, but with those 4 brands and your 50 and 90 sizes, go with the best deal. Tell them straight up, you are price shopping, ready to buy. They usually dont deal because of the demand, especially this time of year, but all you need is one guy to give you a little incentive, thats the one Id get. I guarantee them boys won't complain. You're gonna have a blast, good luck

Honda #1, then all other 50’s. They’re all the “same” but red seems to resell best.

I'm with you 100%...I've always been a Honda guy. Got a 400ex now with a couple go fast parts to putt around on. They're a bit harder to find in a 50 unfortunately though. Basically all the other Japanese brands are easier to find in this size (at least in my experience looking lately). Problem on a lot of what I've seen in these smaller ones is the plastic can be all shotty and cracked (shocker considering the riders, I know...).

Bit the bullet and drove up to VA this afternoon. This thing is a 2012, and I'm thinking I should be able to get at least close to what I paid for it a few years from now if we can keep it in decent shape. Little thing looks to be pretty clean and in good shape. Cranked right up cold on the first pull when I got there so I loaded it up, paid the man and hauled ass back home.

Just throwing this out there- I started my son on a 12v power wheels that does like 6mph when he was 2 or 3. Then when he turned 4 I bought a 24v electric quad that cost me $550. This one does like 10 or 12mph, solid rear axle that will spin the tires, and front IFS.

I’d sell it for $100 if you come and and get. Charges and runs just fine. We upgraded to an RZR 170 and so the 24v doesn’t get used anymore. PM me if interested.
