My wife has some Indian (Pocahontas Indian not Ok med Indian)blood in her. Both of her grandparents were noticeably Indian (again not Ok med Indain). So Jake,Im sure, has SOME Indian blood in him but how much (what percentage) do you have to have before it counts?? I know it didn't take but a miniscule amount of blood for Elizabeth Warren to claim Native American status but in the REAL world what percentage qualifies?? We did a ancestry DNA but it will be 6/8 weeks before its back.

You can't really tell Native American ancestry from a DNA test.

But depending on who you ask, I think it's 1/16 to 50% to be considered N/A. Tribes differ on their requirements from the gov't standards

If your hoping it’s enough to get a check from a tribe good luck most have locked their registration and you can only be born into it now.

This reads a little less "composed" than your posts normally do. Have you been playing with the firewater again? :D

I never cared to look in to it, but family folklore was always that my maternal grandfather would ‘qualify’ because he is 25% North Dakota Sioux. But according to that article, assuming the ‘Standing Rock Tribe’ is the ND Sioux tribe ‘his blood’ derived from, he actually could be a card carrying member. Doubtful he has the required paperwork to make it official though. Regardless, I’m just happy because he still has a full head of jet black hair at 90 years old...and I guess that’s the indicator for male pattern baldness.

"Before it counts" for what?
I have a lot of Cherokee on my mother's side and another kind on my father's side.

Just based on the title - I'd say about a pint.

you could allways register as Lumbee...gotta change your name to Oxendine or Locklear first tho.
Could ya'll qualify as Mulungeons (sp)? I've heard stories...

I dated a girl who’s dad was mulungeon one time.

Seriously, I'm a white guy, I look white, I grew up white, I haven't been a member of a tribe in my life, but have "enough" Lumbee blood to join the tribe. My sister is a card carrying member, but all that really means is she can vote in tribal elections. We're about the same with Cherokee on my Dad's side, but no one has put forth the effort to see if they'll allow us in the Cherokee tribe. It's a non-issue for me, except that it could mean some scholarship money for my kids one day.

Cherokee myself but I’m not on the roll since I feel I don’t deserve it. Have a lot of family on the reservation and family on the roll. IMO the casino money has done more harm than good for the Cherokee people. My nieces and nephews will be set for college and a head start on a good life if they manage their investments and funds properly from their dividends though.

I just wish my relatives would stop mapping our family tree. I recently found out that I'm Cherokee, Black, and Dutch. Our family tree doesn't fork nearly enough especially on my Dad's side and my penis is shorter than I thought. Life is hard.
Sorry for your loss.
