I'm considering doing something similar to this, but it is just me & the dog. I'm getting great offers on my house & I'm thinking of picking up a destination trailer and moving back home if I can get relocated back to our Huntersville office & then building a barndominium.
 
I guess I am the odd man out on this subject. My son went to daycare starting at 3 months old. Many days I went to pick him up he was having so much fun playing with his friends that he didn't want to leave. In my opinion, there is no wrong answer to this situation. It is whatever makes you and your wife happy and aligns with your goals and desires. There are obviously pros and cons to each decision and things like work flexibility and salary can put more weight in one column or the other.

Yeah you know its weird... When my daughter comes home from daycare everyday, she is so excited to tell us what all she did that day. She always brings home something that she drew/colored/made and we have a box we keep all that stuff in, but lately at night, shes been asking if she has to go to school the next day and we say yes, she says "Awww, I don't want to go to school, I want to stay home" So I don't know if she truly doesn't want to go to school or if she is hearing my wife talking about working from home or what. But you know, with the way things are now, I always have that worry in the back of my mind if she is getting picked on or bullied or what and just isn't saying anything about it...

So I am hoping that my wife can find something remote and have the flexibility that she is looking for.
 
I think it might be a little tough finding a new field that she would be interested in coming from dentistry, but I can just tell she is burned out.

She has used computers for the past 12 years updating charts and schedules for patients, so she is familiar with them, just don't know how much of her experience will transfer over to something she could do from home...

medical coding.... i know several people that get notes from doctors on X day and they have so long to update charts after visits.

Similar to the old saying you can have fast, good or cheap...pick two, I find it similar for work. You can make good money, do something you enjoy, have an ideal schedule...pick two. I've never had a job, nor do I know anyone that has been working that didn't wish they were somewhere else. It's a paycheck, look out for #1 first...if she doesn't like it, she go somewhere else. But sounds to me like a better schedule for her and financial stability for the family would be the top priorities by far...with 'enjoyment/interest' being the odd man out.

True. I think you hit the nail on the head with flexibility and financial stability being the top 2 priorities.
 
Been doing a lot of praying lately and crunching numbers and trying to look at this at every angle and I think if we could make a plan to really pay some stuff off, 1 being my car since the wife's car is already paid for, that would free up some money every month and if the wife could take on some sort of job part time just to have some sort of income coming in to help offset some things. Myself, my wife, and my daughter are all currently on my insurance at work, which is roughly around $600 a month. I think I still make too much on my own to qualify for any assistance for insurance coverage for them, but would be nice to free up a good portion of that as well for extra income.
I think with our daughter getting ready to head to kindergarten next year, we could really sit down and think about having another baby and would be able to pick our oldest daughter up from school everyday.

Don't forget that you need to still set $$ aside for the next car.
Anybody who owns a car and intends to always own a car should *always* budget for at least 1 of these 3 things:
- Payment against a loan for a new(ish) car
- savings to buy the next car (to avoid interest next time)
- savings for repair costs

Don't fall into the trap of thinking once a car is paid off it has no expense. This is where a lot of people get into a hole, especially if they have a fairly new car that is just out of warranty but doesn't have any maintenance / repair costs yet. Everything is great until that $1500 bill comes and you have no way to cover it bc of being over-constrained.
Maybe your plan is to go a little longer before the next replacement and just get by w/ an older car. No problem w/ that at all - just be sure to set aside $$ for when it is needed.

Yep. thats part of our plan. Both our cars are "older". Hers is the newest, at 2010. But we have no payments and just keep a little put aside for when something breaks. But, you have to be willing to drive older stuff.

This is exactly what we would do. Plan is to sort of keep doing what we are doing now. Any bonus, unexpected check, and simply putting money back every paycheck for things like that.
 
So the wife has pretty much made up her mind that she just doesn't want to be in dentistry anymore after 12 years. She really wants a job where she can work from home or be remote but hopefully have the flexibility to pick our daughter up after school next year when she starts Kindergarten. The problem is, all of her schooling, training, certifications, courses, and knowledge is in Dentistry. So trying to pick a place to start is a bit difficult. Anyone have any tips on a good place to start looking for her?

Why not look for a job that is in the support of dentistry, like doing filing or billing or ordering supplies or other stuff that could be done remotely.

Hell if she's been in that long she probably knows a number of people in the industry. Just ask some colleagues, is there any kind of job that somebody know really knows this business could do for YOU remotely?

Sounds like she needs to be a Stripperdontist. I don't know what that is, but I'm sure its an underserved niche market.

When you say pick up the kid are you saying she wants a job that is only like 9-3pm M-F remote or something like that?

Linkedin has a search filter for remote jobs, so does indeed

Working from home once a young kid is home, is often really hard, even in the morning hours before pickup time or drop off.
