I purchased a scout 44 rear axle from an individual a couple of years ago. I've been running this axle in my CJ. All the brake parts were new at the time. Said axle is now going to need the brake shoes replaced. Original owner can't remember what year scout the axle came out of. He thinks it was a '79 or maybe '80. My question is were there any differences to the scout brake shoes across a few years or can I just go to a parts store and tell them I need brake shoes for an xxxx year scout rear dana 44? Also, I've heard that brake parts for scouts can be a little difficult to find. Any truth to that? Thanks for any info.

Shoes for a Scout II rear D44 should not be hard to find. All the rearends were virtually the same from ~71-80. Brake parts should be interchangeable between all Scout II rear 44s.

Axle seal arrangements changed around 75/76, but everything else should be identical.

Take the old shoes into the store with you and match them up.

Looks like I was misinformed about the availability of the brake shoes. I went on Advance Auto's site and Auto Zone's site and they are in stock at both. Stock number is the same from around '72 to '80. Thanks for the info guys. I'm still gonna research the BOM to make sure of the year and take an old pair with me to the parts house.
