Scrapping wholes cars.

Since this is being dug up. I recently scrapped a car at a company that specializes in it, and was told by more than 1 local yard that they could no longer buy catalytic converters unless they were attached to the entire vehicle being scrapped. Said laws were passed against them buying them to stop people from stealing them.

In SC you have to have a license that you get from the local sheriff. Copper and Aluminum also require them I believe.
 
Most yards reject rail road iron.

So how does that work if you bought it for the engine, because your putting the motor in another project that already has them or is exempt? Weld them to the hood?

Beginning to do a big purge at the farm. I have everything from cars to computers to railroad tracks and everything in between. Even if its bolted down and isn't of major value or future use, its going. Scrap and reinvest in our infrastructure.

What is the best practice these days. Its been years since I have scrapped at this level.

Is there a Foss recycling in your area? I just started on my third 40yd container this week. "Free" to drop it off. You fill it, call them when it's ready. They pay you whatever scrap price is for your junk, minus a nominal fee ($175 in my case) for pickup. I can't pay my dump truck guy that to haul it to the scrap yard.

Do they pay you a sorted materials price for your scrap, or do you only put certain things in at a time, like shred material this dumpster, heavy metal the next, etc?

I like your idea. Two roughly an hour + away. Might have to give them a shout when I get closer. I have access to dumptrucks, dump trailers and flatbeds. But thats added time and fuel on my end.

No idea. Ive put everything in them. There isn't enough money in it to be worth sorting for me. The only thing I've held back is electric motors.

I want a piece or two of rail to use as an anvil. I'm not far away.

starters and alternators will bring more than scrap steel.Might wanna pile them up if you have a bunch and theyre easy to get to.

The one closest to me has a picture hanging up next to the cashier stating they will not take it and its a crime to have it.

yup, hit this a few weeks ago, took a cat to recycle along w/ a bunch of other stuff. Guy said flat out might as well toss in the general scrap, and to thank the local methheads for that.
Very frustrating given the precious metals in it, since I already have it off anyway I really would prefer for it to be properly recycled but there is no way to do it.

yeah and he probably would have dug it back out.
 
I used to sell my catalytic converters to a place online. I can't remember the name but I'd collect 10-20 of them and put them on a pallet and send them to them and they'd send me a payment on them. I would take them to Raleigh Metals sometimes but it was always a pain since I had to prove I was an automotive business every few times.
