Trust me that not a southern thing. I didn’t know what they were actually called till I left N. Michigan for the army and realized what my grandpa called them was a “nickname”

When my mom was a kid she went into the store and they had a counter you walked up and asked the nice lady behind the counter to box or bag up various produce. Grandma had sent her to get some Brazil Nuts. Mind you this is Florida in the 50’s.

My mom walks up and looks at at this large Black Lady behind the counter and my mom blanks on the name Brazil nut. All she can remember are the toes that the nick name references. After a few um’s and uh’s she squeaked out, Can I have some of those? And pointed.

I bet that lady laughed inside a little.
