New to guns

To the OP.....you may want to take some boating lessons before proceeding. Not sure the connection but from all my reading you are almost guaranteed to lose your investment from a freak boating accident.....

I don't boat. If they want them, they can come try and get them.

I'm a sixth generation American, descended from a Revolutionary War veteran, and I ain't hiding shit.

(Except for my buried spares in the Pisgah forest.)

Boating accidents aside, there are two separate questions here.

1. The shooting test for the carry permit is very easy to pass. I have seen one person fail it but unless you’re straight up scared to pull the trigger (seems unlikely), you should be fine. Many CHP instructors will rent you the gun to take the test with. They all use .22 because it’s a) the cheapest to shoot and b) the easiest to pass with due to low recoil.

2. What pistol should you purchase to carry (and train with). The main factors that influence how well you shoot with any pistol are a) how well it fits in your hand, b) quality of the trigger, and c) barrel length/sight radius. Shoot as many pistols as you reasonably can before buying to evaluate fit. Then consider how you intend to carry it and your typical clothing (plus any compromises you’re willing to make). Have a great body and don’t want to wear oversized shirts? Pocket carry. Are pretty fit and don’t mind oversized shirts? Appendix carry. Have a beer belly? 4 o’clock carry position. Etc. etc.

Pick a pistol that is the right balance of being an effective caliber and capacity vs. size of pistol. A sub nose .357 magnum is gonna suck to shoot, but you can’t fit a M92 in your pocket. Consider .380 auto to be the bare minimum and .45 ACP the maximum. Anything in between will work. 9mm is proven, readily available, and highest capacity (and thus what I carry). *Don’t listen to anyone who tells you you’re not a man if you don’t carry .45 ACP.
