Went a little less redneck for this years, annual rv AC change out. Last year I used a fall protection rope run through a winch snatch block attached to the truss above the camper. It worked but was hard to keep it from swinging into the camper as it was hoisted, so this time I decided to rent a material lifter since I was having to fight 2 up onto the roof.

Much easier this go around. Second picture is showing the setup I used last year.

So what keeps going out on these units that makes them unrepairable?

I'm not an ac expert but here's what I know that makes me believe these two leaked the Freon out over the winter. Only had to replace one last year, and it was the same thing.

Compressors ohmd out good, capacitors checked out fine. The compressors were only pulling around 3.4 amps on a 80 degree day with a FLA of 9.7.

They don't have service ports, so they would have to add them and then hope to find a fixable leak. I figure by the time I pay someone to come do all that, and the possibility of them finding a leak that's not repairable, I can just replace them. I may be wrong idk. We live in our camper full time, so they definitely get used a lot more than a standard rv unit.

FWIW, I put in a GREE Eco-Cool 15k BTU A/C + Heat Pump last year. It is fantastic, just for the ability to get some heat on a cool morning without having to fire the heater and go thru propane.

Yep, sealed up and disposable mentality. A family member used to have an older model at the coast permanently set up. When the roof unit crapped out they did mini split and covered the roof.
