Is it worth it? Toyota warranty

Broke bad and bought my wife a new toyota grand highlander yesterday. Extended toyota platinum warranty, 10yr/100,000mi, is only 1500 more. Obviously doesn't cover wear items but with all the new tech and electronic junk, it seems like a no brainer. We will keep this car at least close to that long. Thoughts?

We bought a new Camry and I told the wife there’s no way in heck that I’d get an extended warranty on a Toyota.
Dude offered us a 10 year 150,000 miler. I already couldn’t sit still because my back was wrecked from working on the ford and I looked down at the grease under my fingernails and asked where to sign!

As long as its a true factory extended warranty supported by all dealers and not a 3rd party thing or dealer specific, for that cost I'd say why not.
Mathematically its a gamble whether it will pan out but IMO there is value to not having to worry about your own sweat like @thebrotherinlaw .

The only question is what kind of mileage she'll put on it bc a lot of folks could hit that 100k in 7 years

For $1500 I would do it if it’s a Toyota factory warranty for sure. I’m not sure if they have that though, so it’s probably third-party which is a lot more questionable. I plan to do it on my new truck before it hits 36K or three years, simply because the warranty is transferable, and adds tremendously to the resale value, and I’m really good at only keeping trucks two or three years, haha.

I wouldn't bother. The chances of something going wrong in that mileage and time frame are VERY low.
I would agree with the prior generations, but the newer ones with all the safety tech and hybrid systems are not as reliable as the stuff from 10-20 years ago. My wifes Sienna has 3 electric motors and a gas motor, and probably more sensors and computers than any of the Apollo missions. Any one of those things could easily be $1500.

100% agree with this.

Assuming annual use is low, you're talking $150-200 per year for up to a decade to have zero concerns about whether anything is your problem. No brainer IMO.

A dollar isn't worth what it used to be, in this case that's working in your favor. Imagine what a $1000 repair today will cost in 7 years.

Those are my concerns.

Do they require you to perform all the scheduled maintenances per Toyotas requirements in order for the warranty to be valid, i.e. can they deny a claim if you didn't get that cabin air filter changed per their recommended service schedule?

the answer is yes - they will require you to do the maintenance. However by law they cannot require that maintenance be done by them, you just need evidence it was done, it could be by anybody including yourself.
The law has a stipulation that they can require maintenance done by them but ONLY if said maintenance is free as part of the purchase... the point is they cannot require you to spend more money with them after purchase to maintain warranty.

Our Mini for instance came w/ free service for 3 years for this very reason.

Yep green ford did a customer of mine that exact way. Her water pump (internal) failed and they went back 2 years ago when she refused a cabin air filter and denied her lifetime warranty

Some good reading here

And everyone should be familiar with the Magnuson Moss Act

That doesn't mean dealers won't do shady or illegal $hit. Be prepared to fight your rights

Im cheap so I would not have gotten the warranty, and didn't when we got our Camry in 2015. That was after 20mins of arguing with the finance guy about it LOL!

Can’t speak for Toyota but have extended warranty from Hendrick on my RAM. It’s been a lifesaver. Three transmissions, transfer case, transfer case linkage, driveshaft, EGR line, brake calipers, O2 sensors, various button panels in cab, rear camera. Any RAM dealer or ASE cert mechanic that does third party warranty work. I’m on my last 6 months at about 95K and have a shop looking at metal in oil filter to see if new engine is warranted. It has paid many thousand more than it cost me. I’m always leary of these things and rarely if ever to that point had signed up for one. It was used when I bought it and had no idea how the PO had treated it. Hate betting against myself. Lol. But has been great.

Damn….did the previous owner roll it off a cliff or something? Are you sure current owner wasn’t the problem? 😜
