Lots of interesting news today

My home county council actually did something smart
Now its a question of whether the developer is going to find a state-level loophole to override it

I hate all these energy and water gobbling data centers, but I have also never deleted an email or a picture from my Google account 😅. Starting to feel like i might be part of the problem here

This is nkt the good thing you think it is. Sure, its great for the folks there but if/when this becomes common it will have major consequences.

I hate seeing farms bulldozed as much as anyone but they are a necessary evil.

Are they? In the 45 yrs I’ve been on this earth I’ve done pretty good so far without them…. YMMV, apparently.

How are they necessary?

Im not going to say they are necessary, but they are coming, whether we want them to or not.... Good on that area to push back against them, but honestly, they will likely just build in the next county. Your county will still loose power and water to it, and get none of the possibly financial gain from it.

We need to figure out how to get the younger generation from selling off the family farms when the parents hang it up. If we are being honest, the DCs are bringing the kind of money that could create generational wealth vs working your ass off running a farm, even if it does provide $$$.

Really? Cause they've been around for well over a decade. You're on here, so you have an email address. Data center. You ever Google much? Data center. Im friends with you on Facebook. Data center. Got a drivers license? Data center. You served in the military. Uncle Sam funds some MASSIVE data centers.

How are they necessary?

I would expect you of all people to understand this already, but see above.

Once again, im all for building them responsibly and especially for them paying for whatever infrastructure upgrades they require. But unless we are going back to analog everything, they've got to be built.

Why do they have to sprawl so much? Its gross. Why not go up? Or build on superfund land? They are not helping themselves by building on 'wild' land and good farm land

Good question. Ive done several that are 7 stories tall. Idk what the limitation is there. But im with ya on not building on good farm land. I get why they want to, but I hate to see it happen.

This isn’t true at all. Why do they say everything is in the cloud! It’s in the sky being stored. Duh!

My Question is Why do they have to be built right here in the areas we live? Information travels across the the globe in milliseconds. they could put them anywhere. All the talk about how they have to be cooled, then put them in cold places... away from my house.

While in Vegas I saw SEVERAL buildings right off the strip that are data centers. Seems like an Odd damn place to put them. somewhere that it's HOT, no damn water... in the middle of everything. MAssive AC units the size of 53' trailers lined the sides of the building looking like trailers parked at a warehouse. the amount of power draw has to be insane.

Red units are AC. Looks like their own power station on site :D and AC Units on standby parked in the yard.

Yeap. Nothing to hide there. Ive had my hand in building more than a dozen of em. Yet I still support restricting them. But whether I've built em or not doesn't change the fact that we live in a digital data driven world now.

Its no different than building a business park or factory on somebody's old farm. I dont particularly like it, but it aint my land and they can do what they want with land they bought. Now, if they start taking land by eminent domain to build them, thats another conversation.

They are putting them everywhere. They are building them in Europe and Asia. There are talks about putting them in South America or Africa where land is cheap. The biggest hurdle is getting the information back to where the populous is. The amount of cabling that would have to be stretched across the ocean is not something any of them are interested in, currently. Every DC each company builds in the US is connected together with thousands of fibers.

as with most things r-tarded humans get involved in......they'll go way to far one way (and ruin it) and then pull back and go another way, and beg for gov't help

I can see it happeneing, why can't others?
