My inlaws got a rescue mutt about 6-8 months ago. Super sporty, health 50-60lb pup that's about 1.5 years old. She was running around in the back yard chasing a rabbit when she went limb. Back half completely paralyzed. After spending thousands of dollars on MRI's and stuff at the vet, turns out it was a spinal stroke, and she should mostly make a full recovery after a few weeks. Never realized such a thing could happen, but its pretty scary. I think my takeaway would be that if it happens to my dog, I'm not spending the money because it is either temporary and will get better on its own, or permanent, and there's nothing you can do, so throwing thousands of dollars at a vet isn't going to change anything.

If i didnt take mine to the vet for something like that my wife would paralyze me....

I have spent over $6000 on my 6 year old lab and $2000 on my 4 year old lab and have a 13-year-old lab that has been fighting bone cancer for over 3 years and tough as nails they tried to get me to have him put down 3 years ago when we took him to the vet i told the vet he wasn't done living yet and he will let me know when he is done living,.

I used to say stuff like that until our dog was puking up and shitting blood all over our room simultaneously, looked like he was stabbed in both ends, of course at 3am. Spent 4days at the emergency vet and just swiped the card. I swear this dog is part cockroach, I thought he was legit going to die at least 7 times, and still kicking, he will be 18 this month!

One of our dogs broke her leg in a freak accident the night Helena happened. Had to drive her 4hrs each way the next morning to get to an emergency vet that was open for them to splint it and give her pain meds. Then ended up having to take her to a specialist dog surgeon near Charlotte to get her leg fixed. Titanium rod and all that good stuff. Lets just say it wasn't cheap.

We paid alot for our oldest dog for medicine and treatments until we just knew that it was time.

Then add in all the times we DIDNT go to the vet for a cut on their pads and I just glued them back up.

Having 4 dogs that act like they just did Crack 24/7 they get themselves into some shit all the time.

That's pretty crazy. But, I'll do a lot for my fur kids. Pretty much the same thing I would do for the humans.

I'll do things for the fur children I didn't do for my human children, Mostly because the human children can tell you what they ate or did to get in the condition they are in! It can suck, But it's part of the responsibility of being a fur parent.
 
RIP Bentley, we had to put him down this morning, he would have been 18 in feb. I lovingly said he was rat terrier bred with cockroach, as I can count at least 5 times where I thought for sure he was going to pass and he bounced back. We soft rescued him from a family member who kept him in a crate 20hrs a day for his first 3yrs of life, he's been living the high life since.
