1987 toyota 22 with carb. runs rich until temp is at operating temp then runs good. is it possible with something in carb. tried temp sensor. any ideas? thanks. checked choke system. it works. could the egr valve sticking cause truck to run bad when cold and perfect when operating temp. any ideas? thanks.
 
yotas had a thermostatic choke iirc. if so that is your prob.
 
They're suppose to run a bit rich anyway untill warm. Hence the need for a choke. Is it rnning richer than normal?
 
Pull the air box off the top of the engine. 3-4 10mm bolts and a few hoses. Look down into the carb. You'll see 2 barrels, a primary and a secondary. Down in the secondary the butterfly should be closed. If the engine is warm the choke should be open (a butterfly on the top of the carb) follow your linkage to the actuator and see if it's plugged in. You also might check your fuses first. The other thing to check is the vacuum lines. (there's a billion of them) Just follow them to see if any are broken or have popped off.

i checked the choke system. all checked o.k. could it be the egr valve not operating correctly causing the running rough when cold and running good after warmed up. any ideas. thanks.
 
Yeah, get a Weber 32/36DGEV, swap it out with the factory junk Toyota carb, and cook yourself a nice meal.
 
Most carburated vehicles run rough/a bit poorly when cold. It's really pretty normal. Mine will fall flat on it's face if I try and get on it when it's still on choke/ high idle. It's just kind of a carb trait. If it's running good warm, I'd leave it alone. Does it stay running when cold or does it die?
