Ski Season in NC...

You and the rest of ASU/LMC....maybe Watauga High too? will also be skipping for opening day at Sugar.

Have fun with all the people if you go! :flipoff2:

Sugar opened today. App is supposed to open Friday. Should be a good week... I think that there might be a decent amount of natural snow at the higher elevations over this week.

yeah, especially if you've spent any time out west
no doubt...I went with a friend to Winterplace a few years back, we had been in Utah, Colorado, and Whistler the last few years.....two runs and we loaded up and left. I'd still bang down a slope in NC though, certainly if I lived in Boone.

If you're good at it in the east...you will be great at it in the west. There seems to be better traction out there, for wheeling and skiing. East coast its mud-n-rocks (east)v/s sticky rocks(west) with wheeling. Skiing it's ice/some snow(east) v/s powder.(west)
Ahh yeah..might be time to break out the ole' stainless steel supershape Volants.lol
They were all the rave 10 yrs ago!:bounce2:

You need to check out App's snowboard parks, they are on short runs but they have some of the best boxes rails, etc that you will see.

X2. They probably have more park features than Snowshoe, minus a superpipe.

you ever checked out any of the parks out west???

They are super crazy. Most anywhere around Tahoe has awesome parks and super long too. I've never been to any better parks than in the Tahoe area. However, that was 2 years ago so it may be different this year. This year's trip is set for Sugarloaf, so we'll see how the northeast can do it

I try to stay away from NC slopes, but when I only get 4-6 days a year out west, NC seems to temporairly satify the urge, somewhat.

Plus its a good place to practice dodging all the idiot beginners that try to consistently ski Tom or Boulder... :shaking:

This will be an interesting season- first time for me snow boarding the NC slopes. I have been hitting Vail, Breck, and Copper around 10 times a year... because they were only 90 minutes away. But sadly now that is gone.

As far as the east coast, I've only been on Ober Mtn in Gatlinburg. How do the slopes around here compare to that one? Longer I hope.

ohhh, man im sorry.

Your going to be SO disappointed in what we have to offer around here.

Better start getting into the park mindset. The longest run we have is at Sugar, which they claim to be 1.5 miles.

no I don't. I hate Snowboarding and I find them quite annoying on the slopes.. generally.
I was however impressed with Snowshoe... but that may have been due to low expectations.
here's my kind of skiing:

I groomed run's a groomed run regardless of where you are.. The main difference is the amount of snow and the views around you. (the above is beautiful btw) The pics above dont make me want to go out west though.. what makes me want to ski out west is the chance of getting dumped on and steep rocky, treey, chutes. While bowls are fun they just dont do it for me...

I was into the whole park scene in college... well now it's all about speed and carving.

Yeah Snowshoe is probably one of the closest atmospheres to out west skiing we have here on the east coast. Cup Run and Shays are each pretty challenging and if you say they're not then you're not hitting it hard enough. Each of them is a good 1.5 miles.

Winterplace is fun purely for the lift rides... You get to see some awesome crashes on the Snow Bowl, Turkey Chute, or Drop Off... you also get to enjoy dodging people.. Basically it's fun once a year for one day, maybe twice.

NC mountains are steep, icy, conjested messes but still fun... App's park (as well as locals) are pretty amazing. I'd put those kids up against anyone in the super parks out west. I mean all they do is go to camps in the summer and build jumps in the winter. Other than that you can ski App on one ski backwards... Not worth it if you're going to ski.

Hawksnest is icy, short, and steep... but typically much less crowded (and cheaper) then the other NC resorts.

Sugar... sorry but I dispise sugar and will never go back until they spend some money to update the lift to the top. I just refuse to sit on a lift for 20+ minutes for a 2 min. run. They dont offer any discounts (college, etc.) so they dont get my $$.

Beech... Skiing in NC is best at Beech.. the high speed quad gets you to the top very quickly and they have some decent runs.

Gatlinburg.. never been there and never will.. Same for Cattalooche (sp?) or Wolf Laurel.

I hate Sugar as well (every time I go they kick me out...) , but its a lot closer than Beech. Hawksnest is a good little place that has some nice little areas and is not nearly as crowded.

Tahoe or Jackson Hole are by far my favorite. Tahoe for the overall experience, Jackson Hole for the pure extreme skiing

Hawksnest will only be open for tubing this year. That was my resort of choice last year mostly because of the elbow room and cost. I knew the runs well enough to avoid the usual ice patches.

I would love to go out west. I dream of long backcountry runs.

Winterplace is good enough for me to make a day trip and not feel like a complete waste. I'd actually make a weekend out of anything in NC because I'll crash with friends at App and party most of the time.

I've been heading out west every year for about 5 now except last year, and every other year before that for another 4 or so. I don't think anyone is arguing that East<West x1,000,000,000,000. It will have to do though since I don't live out west.

Breck does have a hostile though and I know that at least my friend and I are planning on heading out there during early March (UNCC Spring Break). Cheap flights out since he works at the airport, $30/night at the hostile and then lift tickets. Can't really beat that with gas prices and a small group actually willing to make the trip.

Brent, :flipoff: on your snowboarding hatred. I am going to purposely slide into your legs and take you out. Give you something to complain about. Bwhahahaha

I skied Hunter MT. in New York a few years back...it was definately differant with longer runs, more runs, faster lifts, but there were a million people there. And with 3 bars, one at top, one in middle and one at the base. Lets just say that there were plenty of ski patrol and medics seen working throught the weekend. Even saw a medi-copter take away a girl that folks said was wasted and hit a double black by accident. Hunters blacks would be double blacks in N.C. I thought i was a decent skier, till i hit a double blk. at Hunter. I slid on my tail at least half way down after a rut cought me off guard. We are talking straight down with moguls, trees, and ice. Definately differant from what I was used too around her in n.c. Worth a trip..and the chicks and their accents were fun too!

Picture Tommy Gun (or what ever it's called))at sugar, only 10 times longer, 2 times steeper and 100 times bumpier and tree lined. Once i fell, didnt/couldnt stop sliding for what seemed like 5 mins.

I grew up learning to ski at Wintergreen, VA... I love Snowshoe, but nothing compares to out west. I've been to a few places in Utah and a lot more in Colorado. But my favorite place on the east coast is Vermont, its a very unique place.

My favorite place to ski, I mean I'd go there 9 out of 10 times if I had the choice is A-Basin in Colorado.
