XJ auto tranny issue

Here's the deal. My daughter has a 2000 XJ with an auto tranny. She called me this morning right after I got to work to say that her car won't move. She said that no matter what gear she put it in it acted like it was in park or neutral. I just drove the thing two nights ago and it drove as normal as ever. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. It was pretty cold down our way this morning. I don't know if something may be hung up from being so cold. I had her try to let it warm up for a few minutes but it didn't seem to make any difference. Anybody got an idea of what would cause this just out of the blue? Thanks.
 
going to ask this first but have you checked the fluid? Have to changed the filter in the tranny? how many miles on the jeep?

Fluid is the first thing I'm going to check when I get home this afternoon. Last time I checked the fluid was a month or so ago. It was fine then and it doesn't leak any fluid. We've only the had the jeep about 3 months now and everything has been fine until this morning. This is my daughters first car. I haven't had the tranny serviced since we've had it and it has right at 159,000 on the clock. Also, wife just called and said she tried it when she was home for lunch. She said it did go into all the gears when she tried it, but something still didn't seem "right". She said it could just be her imagination though since it acted up this morning.
 
I don't know other than fluid or screen. If you need one or parts for one let me know.
 
IF its not any of the mechanical causes it could be the computer as the Aw4 trans has it own computer that controls it. But for the most part the aw4 is pretty tuff trans and they are at almost every junk yard for cheap
 
So I went home yesterday to check out my daughters car and the "alleged" problem. Got in, started it up, put it in drive and away I went. I could find absolutely nothing wrong. It drove and shifted like it should. When I checked the fluid (engine running tranny in neutral) it was in the safe range. :confused: Daughter swears that it wouldn't move no matter what she did. I'm beginning to think that maybe the emergency brake cable was frozen and when it wouldn't move easily she didn't push it to. I don't know. I guess it's just one of them jeep things. Thanks for the input.
 
The E brake does sound like a possibility.
Another thing you may want to check is if the PO put some type of "dope" in the tranny.
If it was too thick because of the cold the pump may not have wanted to pump it.
I am a big fan of having the tranny pumped. Gets more of the old stuff out and flushes out the TC. They can also tell you if the tranny pump is strong or not.
