1987 Toyota truck rear axle question

Hey fellas. A buddy of mine has a 1987 Toyota pickup body and frame and was wanting to know which axles came stock on that model, as well as the gear ratio. Did they offer multiple ratios, etc.?

Its most likely a 8" 4cyl housing with 4.10 gears and a 7.5 IFS split case up front I believe

Front would have been ifs not straight axle.

All axles 86-89 are the same; only a few possible ratios.
If 4 cyl w 5spd, stock tires factory, 4.10
4 cyl w/ auto tranny, 4.30
4 cyl 5spd w/ 31" tire option, 4.56 (fairly rare)
If V6, could be 4.10 or 4.88 (rare)

Take a look at the VIN, it will tell you what was on it

i dont think mine has 4 10 in it and its a 88 but i cant remeber what it was when i pulled it out and welded it

best mileage = 5.29s

Foolish question here but wouldn't the 5.29 be worse on gas? I thought the taller the gear the more torque but worse on gas. And vise versa the lower the gear the less torque but the better gas milage.

Well, mathematically, the 5.29s will make the engine RPMs per tire revolution higher; you'll find them in the 3k+ range alot more. IIRc mine (A/T 22re 33s 5.29s) runs around 3k at 65ish mph
so technically, it is more combustions per mile - howver that's also where the power in the 22re motor is (higher end) and it runs more efficiently, not being lugged as much - so the ECU isn't dumping fuel in as much to compensate. E.g. more power for less gas per combustion, higher efficiancy.
My mpgs actually went up when I changed from 4.88 to 5.29. I was surprised too.
You do have to keep in mind to calculate/measure actual mileage (GPS etc) b/c the odo will be wrong.

Mathematically that puts the ratios back to stock, so it is "correct".
However IMO stock ratio w/ big tires is not adequate, it does not give you the power that is in the higher RPMs. Just depends on what you want out of it, opinions vary.
