hey , just wanted to introduce myself, im 16, im heavily involved in scouting and therefore as much offroading as my 97 mercury mountaineer (stock) can handle since its the only car my parents will pay for before im graduate college.

Im pretty fluent as far as mechanics goes

Ive put together a 1974 suzuki t-500 street bike and a 1972 chevrolet c-10 shortbed from the ground up without any help, so i may not be very fluent as far as tech language goes but i can use a socket set ;]

anyway im just lookin at gettin alot more involved in the sport but my major issue is money =]

nice to be a member!

well one of my first questions is... what would be best to build?

im really good with welding

so i was wondering if it would be better for me to build a tube buggy/crawler (i live in the sticks closer to the smokies than the beach)

or my other option is an old cj-2a willys for $500
the problem with this is it has a 51 hurricane engine in it so they cut a hole in the hood for the carb
the starter is bad
and prbably 1/8 of the body is bondo/rust

so what do you think?

im on a budget of $1200 before next august
so for now im looking for a cheap toy that i can get to be a very nice crawler

Thanks! :bounce2:

No way you can put together a custom tube buggy for under 1200...at least no way that I can see.

Go with the CJ, or better yet, go looking for CJ-5, 7, or a YJ if your looking for a Jeep to start out on.

i would love to find another jeep but i just cant find any for under 1200, especially any others that would be willing to wait until the end of summer to sell... already checked craigslist. any ideas?

Mail MUD CITY on this board. he has a white 1989 Jeep YJ wrangler that I think is close to that price...

seems like there are always XJs on here for FS under a grand.

x2, check the vehicles for sale section on this board and buy a used Jeep Cherokee. Go for the newest one you can find and one with the 4.0 engine and auto tranny.

I'd also recommend a Suzuki Samurai. Offer this dude $1,000 for this Samurai without the Toyota axles; http://nc4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63510

You are not going to build a buggy for $1,200, and that old Jeep will be a POS.
