Ok, I've been searching the NCDMV site for this one, but can't find the answer. Any help finding it would be appreciated.

We got our 10y/o daughter a go-cart for her birthday. we live in a "no Outlet" neighbor hood in a rural area. perfect little loop around the block for a go-cart. I've been teaching her how to drive and the rules of the road. Yesterday some Crotchety old Codger pulls up in front of my house while she's riding and says that it's illegal and she's gonna get run over. I honestly didn't think about the legality of riding it around the block. So I wanted to find out what the final word is on this matter. Is there an engine cc size limitation? She has an electric scooter that she rides out there, is there different laws on motors vs. engines?

Everyone else in the neighborhood has been smiling and waving and enjoys seeing her ride it. Ignorance of the law on my part is no excuse, I accept that. But I want to know what the law says on the matter as opposed to hear say from so one who may not like the sound of the go cart passing his house. :shaking:
 
I'd say that , on a state rd. go-carts are illegal. Except in a parade or something. I had trouble in the past, as a kid, riding dirtbikes. It was always that one neighbor that turned me in because she could. It was a dirt road that was also a dead end. The sherrifs deputy didnt really see a problem with it, but said she called every time, and he HAD to respond.

I say, make friends with that neighbor.
 
Legally, the problem will probably be the fact that's she's only 10.
I'd think the DMV etc would put this in the same catagory as ATVs.

I'd just call the local police station and ask somebody, esp since if this jackleg does call the popo, they'll be the ones to show up.
 
if it has a road sign,(I.E. State funded)
you would need lights, brake lights, turn signals and seat belts, etc. I would think

2 wheels you have the bicycle/moped argument
 
Called the local PD, they referred me to the Sheriff, Sheriff said I was on a State maintained road and connected me to the SHP. SHP said as far as Noise Ordinance that's the Sheriff's call, but seeing as it's a State Maintained road it's illegal to ride the go cart on it.

As for her age, I did see a note about the kids have to be 8 y/o which I find odd since they have go -cart racing leagues with kids as young as 5y/o.

Guess I'll mark out a track in the back half of the yard for her.
 
Call his bluff. Get one of those orange flags from Norhtern ($10) and let her ride the street. If the cops are finally called, I doubt you'll get anymore than a warning, the first time.

Maybe more than a warning, if they figure out he has already called and been told no. But who knows.
 
Man WTF is wrong with people these days, cant they just let the little girl enjoy her new toy without putting in their snobby azz input. If I were you I'd wave to the snob, said "OK" real loud so they would hear it and when they turned the car around give 'em a good ole :fuck-you: in their rear view mirror.

OK, I'll play the @$$hole

Brent, you've been to my house and know the neighborhood well... not unlike yours. When we moved in, there weren't any issues. Now that some of the kids have grown a little, everyday is an adventure in making it to the house! For instance, at least once a week, some crumb muncher comes flying down a driveway, makes ZERO attempt to see if there's a car coming and proceeds out into the middle of the street where I have to take evasive actions... there have been DOZENs of near misses reported by the neighborhood communication lady.

Then there would be the teens that like to play chicken in the street (WTF happened to the parents that tell their kids "when you SEE a car, get OUT of the road!" :confused: ) They see you coming (hard to miss ANY of my vehicles) and stand in the middle until you get within 15'-20'! I'm TIRED of waiting for them to move off the roadway... the next game we're gonna play is "go get your momma/daddy to come explain why you wanna play chicken with cars". If that doesn't work, the sheriff (of course they NEVER do it near his house) has already assured me he has no problem making an example! :lol:

Add to that the 5-6 pocket bikes/choppers, 2 go-carts, 12 minibikes & 3 ATVs in my little "block" and it becomes scary! I have no problems with a kid having fun... however, their level of common sense with most is slightly less than my dog! *IF* I'd wanted to dodge them or hear them running past my house for 2-3 hours each evening (back/forth/back/forth), I'd have moved to Mtn. City! Fortunately, WSPD laid the smack down a few years back on that by ticketing the PARENTS! (haven't seen one since! :D

My 2 main thoughts on this...

- You DON'T want to the be poor SOB that accidentally hits/maims/kills a kid on a minibike/go-cart/ATV riding illegally on neighborhood streets

- You dang sure DON'T want to be the parent of that child either!

Do you have kids?
 
Yes, he does. So do I and I agree with him. Not everyone wants to worry about a child driving around their neighborhood for hours on end on a go cart/atv/whatever (not aimed at Brent's little girl, or anyone in particular). If you live in the country, it would be one thing. But I can't imagine buying my kid a 4 wheeler or go cart and living in town, in a neighborhood.

Yup, and in my (limted) epxerience, pretty well behaved, too.

I'm a parent too... and also used to live on a "neighborhood" street, w/ a family a block up that always has the litter out in teh yard... and street... never watching where the F they were going.

I think they important key here is (1) Brent said it's a "no outlet" road, so I'm assuming thsi means few people and little traffic, and (2) also he's there being attentive.

So I've been wondering.
Lets say a cop is called and somebody gets a citation.
Who gets it? The kid, who is breaking the law, or their parent?
 
I agree with Rat, I aint no parent yet but I do remember some of the stupid chit i did as a kid/teen on the roads. However I live in a county with no city or big town to mention of, and cruising the roads round here u have to be mindful to dodge all the dirtbikes, 4wheelers, go-carts, tractors, dogs, horses, deer, cows, (codgers) and so on.... Im so use to it now that it doesnt even cross my mind how dangerous it is anymore. I just brake, smile and wave.
 
Caver Your absolutely right, and I do agree with you. I think you also know me well enough to know that I taught My Kid NOT to be the Darwin Candidate chicken playing, no looking little crumb munching idiot you so accurately described. Anyone can come over unannounced and quiz, exam then testify as to her paying attention to all rules of the road and pulling the fawk off the road when she sees a car.

I don't have a beef with the law anymore than I have a beef with the enforced Speed limits that I am suppose to maintain. I guess I just find it interesting that Bikes, Scooters and Pedestrians are ok but the Go Cart isn't.

But your right and I won't argue your points. ;) as for Bullard and Burrell, after reading Cavers post how could anyone question him for not having kids. those are the Words of a parent, and a Curmudgeon :flipoff2:
