tranfercase popping???

i was wheeling the other night and my jeep started popping not loud but e nuff to hear it. i was thinking it was the transfercase but i dont really know. i have heard ppl say they hear it all the time in theres. just trying to get an idea of what it might be and what to check.

I've been out of Jeeps and into Toyotas for a while now so I'm a little out of the loop, but the best I remember, the Jeep transfer cases are chain and sprocket driven instead of gear driven like the Toyotas. over time those chains and sprockets wear out and the chain slips. this is the popping that is heard. or at least that's what mine was when I had my last Jeep.

i really dont know what kind it is. it is what ever came stock in a 98 limited cherokee.

Are you sure it is the Tcase and not a Ujoint?

About certain its a 231j

should be an NP231 if I'm not mistaken.
