Anybody run Home Automation here.
Mr. House
SchlageLink
X10

Also if your running a home server for movies and music post up; whatcha got?

Im moving into a new house in three weeks and need some tech geek stuff to dream about.

Thanks!

A friend of mine does this. I'm not sure if he owns the company or works for them, but he's written all the programs for it. Can't remember the name of the company, but it is badass. He's got some 10k+ sqft house, $4mil easily, all automated. He can do everything from open his garage door to check the pH level in his pool with his iPhone.

He can even adjust the thermostat and turn on the oven with his phone.

I do run a home media server for my music and stuff. Nothing fancy, I just run Windows 7 Pro on a dual core 3ghz processor with 2 TB of storage and an HD TV Tuner card. I utilize Windows Media Center and a Media Center Extender on Wireless N to watch HD movies in my living room. I don't currently use the HD Tuner Card, but I do have plans to hook up an omnidirectional antenna in the attic or roof and then I can watch local channels on the extender as well. If I wanted to watch movies in other rooms I'd need to add extenders but I don't really have a need. I also have a PS3 so I use it in conjunction with PlayOn to watch things that I can on the media extender. I also use Netflix on the PS3.

No home automation, but I hear kids work well for that sometimes.

That is sick. I'd love to have full automation. One click of the iphone and a beer pops out of my couch. mmmmmm:beer:

Not much automation outside of scripts in the MX-810 remote for the theater. I know X10 can be buggy at times, but unless you're building from scratch, retrofitting the good stuff (that uses cat5 to communicate), there's gonna be drawbacks or $$$ to install)

It don't cost a ton to get started in home automation.
Mr. house can be found free online you just have to get x10 light switches and use the wireless .

Now if your building a home from scratch you want to run the cat 5 to EVERYTHING and use that its easier.

I'm looking at doing some lights and audio visual stuff.
start a movie and the lights dim
wake up everymorning and you get the weather report read to you.

that kind of stuff.

It is cool as hell. I was doing some work at his house once and I called him up and asked if he was home. He was like "no, I'm in Boston, but call me when you get there and I'll open the garage doors for you."

cooper electronics has a cool new setup that is easily integrated into existing construction homes.

I really want to set up my 360 to stream music from my extra hard drive (got about 40 gigs of music on it now, 660 folders or so.)

BUT, from what I hear the 360 will soon be putting in an update that allows anything USB to be able to mesh with 360 operating system. IE, you can plug your Hard drive, USB drive, Flash Drive, etc. into your 360 and run the music off it....

Also means you can put in a TB size external on your 360..
