Stigma behind pitbulls

Two of the guys I work with have them, one has 2 sisters "Honey" and "Sugar". Both fitting name as they are the sweetest dogs. Both LOVE everyone. The other guy has a male with a head as big as a jeep. "Samson" is the same way. He might kill you, but it'd be by drowning cause he licked you to death. He is just the sweetest dog, LOVES everyone. All 3 have been socialized since they were puppies and I think that's why they love everyone. Cause everyone loved them when they were puppies. My upstairs neighbor has one named Mary and she is a lover too. I've yet to see an aggressive one. (That wasn't on TV as a fighting dog).

But I agree with the "thug gangsta dog" thing.

That is what I have always been told from Pit owners and anyoen else who has experience with Pits....

Any dog can be agressive....my dog is a mix of Chocolate Lab and Rotweiler and even he can get " a little too playful" at times but I haven't ever gotten worried abuot it. I thikn any dog can snap at any time no matter the breed. I went out in the back yard a few days ago and Duke (the mix) was jumping all over me and I was telling him to get down, Wylie our 8 pound yorkie came off the porch and went after him barking, growling, and biting him until he got away from me and wouldn't let Duke get near me. Seeing that kind of tells me it has nothing to do wtih the breed itself but the tempermant of the dog at a given time...
 
yes pits are owner loyal i will say that they are protective of their owners and their owners property. But on the same key I would rather have a dog like that if someone breaks in my house and im not there!

What you consider "owner loyal" and "protective of their owners and their owners property" is dangerous to basically everybody except for the dog's owner. It's great for when someone breaks into your house, but how great is it when he gets out and mauls a jogger or your neighbor's kids because he thinks he has to "protect you"?

I dunno...If I ever get a dog I'll plan to be the dog's protector; not the other way around. Dogs are still dumber than the dumbest person you've ever met. I don't see the point of owning a dog that might seriously injure someone and open me up to all kinds of liabilities.

So what you are saying is any "Owner Loyal" dog is in the same catagory? German Sheperds, Golden Retrivers, Labs, Cocker Spanials, IrishWolfhounds ect. Just because a dog can be. Protective of a human does not make it aggresive a dog can read body language and sense emotions, some people can't even do that.... So are you sure dogs are that dumb? You are surely intitled to your opinion as I am to mine I just disagree. I feel you you should judge a dog on a dog to dog basis not by a breed. Punish the deed not the breed

I would rather have an "owner loyal" dog as opposed to whatever it is your looking for. I'm assuming a yappin little lap dog since you wanna protect it. I love smart dogs, no ours can't wash the laundry, do the dishes, or help me on my buggy, but they are intelligent. They can sense danger and either alert us, or go after the threat. My dog took down a neighbors dog the other day when it headed for my fiance's boys who were home alone. They watch our backs when we can't.

I am not a big fan of pits, chows, or rotts or any other dog that have "fighting" in their blood though. I have been around a few who are well mannered and good dogs, but in the back of my mind theirs a "what if" scenario goin on.

If they are your breed of choice it doesnt bother me, I just don't trust them.

b.s. Some jackass' black lab "protected him" from me at Umstead Park a couple of weeks ago by repeatedly charging me and barking aggressively as I walked down a public trail. That dog couldn't sense anything except the fact that I'm larger than him and his owner and I was walking in their direction. As a person who spends a lot of time outdoors this type of thing happens to me fairly often. I'm not a threat to these people. The bad thing is that half these idiot owners probably think their dog sensed something and protected them from an actual threat. Your dog is not psychic nor is it a master of human psychology.

Sounds like it was the jackass' fault and not the dogs. A dog needs to be taught how to behave just like a child. If they are not taught what is acceptable and what is not they will never know. Some people are not smart enough to own a dog just like some aren't smart enough to be parents.

Oh, I agree fully. I'm just saying that this is the type of action that you are fostering when you encourage your dog to be loyal and protective. The dog shouldn't have been off the leash to begin with (park rules), but it takes a special person to let an aggressive dog off the leash in a park with a few hundred other people wandering around.

While I didn't plan to respond to the comment that "I'm assuming a yappin little lap dog since you wanna protect it", I'll go ahead and say that if I were to get a dog it would probably be a black lab. Kinda ironic I guess since I just brought up my recent encounter with one, but if I get a dog I will make sure it knows I'm the alpha male and it fits somewhere below myself and every other human on the totem pole.

I'm not going to tolerate any dog of mine being a dick to my neighbors, my guests, the guy who reads my gas meter, or anyone else for that matter. I really don't think my experience as a dog owner will suffer for it. I'd rather for everyone to think I have the friendliest dog ever than for me to feel like my dog is protecting my household.

LOL, man I saw that EXACT thing over at Bur-Mil park or the County park a few years ago. The dude on the other end of the chain looked like the fool that got his ass beat by the epic beard man in the amber lamps video.
 
i love my pits!!! ive as many as 10 at the time b4 and got 3 now! they give me no problems as long as the neighbors goats stay in there fence!

But like i said everyone who knows my dog thinks i do own a very friendly dog and if you read my previous post i said i have been attacked by a pit before. Like what was stated earlier the dog needs to be trained. so still i believe my pit can be and is just as kind as anyone elses dog can be/ is. I believe people are scared of pits because of the name and what Humans have done to the dogs. Pits dont just fight to fight HUMANS train them to fight, and being the most common dog trained to do this maliciously cruel act they earned the reputation for what humans did.

My parents dog is sweet until she gets a wild hair. She has pinned people against the wall, attacked other dogs out of the blue, and generally been very unpredictable. We don't let our kids around her most of the time, unless we are right there with them. That sure as hell isn't the lab in her doing that.
That is my experience with pits.
The way I see it, there are so many other breeds of dogs out there that are so much less unpredictable and you can always count on them being calm, why take the chance. I know my kids can jump all over my black lab and she will sit there and take it. I never have to worry about her acting out, EVER.

My brother has a registered, trained, full blooded Choc. Lab that acts EXACTLY as the mix you describe. That's not your mental image of a lab doing that, but matter of factly ANY breed of dog or mix of breeds is capable of acting out that way.

same as 20"+ wheels, gold teeth, lots of peircings, tats, rebel flags, fart cans on ricers, 16 switches,stacks,black wheels, affliction tee shirts, fo-hawks, spray tans, hair product, flat bills, black socks, wallet chains, skinny jeans, busting a sag,trucker hats, big glasses, Ugs, and the list goes on....I'm sure some people have them because they love them and have been around them all their life.....However, most I see are "things" ,accesories to their owners life styles...sorry if you don't buy it, I'm just calling it like I see it.
