The re-birth of Callalantee

Any new word about pricing? I know the deal with passengers they kept saying just wanted to get though some holiday. Have they lowered it yet? What about yearly or monthly passes? What about charging per vehicle instead of per person?

I was up there a few weeks ago on veterans day and the prices were all the same (15 and 11 per passenger). We paid 25 a night to camp for 4 people, and 52 bucks for 2 days with a passenger. The new lady that owns the place was very nice and asked a bunch of questions. She also said they would charge me if her 18 to 20 something year old son had to rescue me from the Mtn if I get stuck.... . I gave her my 2 cents and said 5 a passenger would be better because I'm cheap and so on. She basically said, "we could afford it....look at your jeeps". I understand her logic but said I would not be going back unless it was for a day and by myself. They have big plans from the sound of her son who seems to run the place. It is a great place to wheel and I hope they succeed. Oh yeah, the bathrooms were clean and heated! I gave it 2and1/4 stars:lol:

Several of us up there Thanksgiving Weekend. Trail signage lookin good, Doug. The improvements are coming along!

Like the idea of numbering the jcts.

My kids are grown and gone.
I don't have to pay extra for them.
As far as the rate increases go, i have no dog in this fight.
However...............................................................
If it cost's too much to wheel @ Callalantee,
Let pottery be your new hobby.
It's way cheaper.
Flame suit on.

no flames from this direction

The truth is that 4 wheeling is not a cheap hobby. It may appear that way from a distance or start out that way but when mod fever strikes you'll find yourself with a highly modified (useless on the street) vehicle riding on a trailer behind a dedicated tow vehicle. At least that's my story. Those trail use fees are a drop in the bucket. :D

First I'll say this, I have the money to wheel there if I choose.

From where I and others I wheel with live it is a substantial expense in gas to get there as well as provisions for the weekend. When you add this up with the new rates it's too much for a lot of families. If you live close by and/or don't take your family or other passengers then it's not as large a burden on the budget.

I and my group did not go to Callalantee for Thanksgiving for the first time in about four years due to the current rates. I do not intend to go back and am checking out other venues that are more favorable to passengers.

I understand that they have to make a profit and I have no issue with that but I and others I have spoken with agree that the fees need to be restructured for families. It also should have no bearing on how our rigs are built. I for one haven't made major changes in my well built rigs in many years. Any changes I do make are on the cheap and done by me. There are many trails up there that offer a good ride for stock vehicles anyway.

The most important thing that was needed to put them in the black was to control entrance to the property. This coupled with a reasonable increase would have been accepted by everyone and avoided all the drama.

They need to understand that they are a business and part of their patronage is made up of family's. They could possibly make more money if they didn't charge so much for passengers and draw families back to their park.

I trust they will succeed even at the expense of losing family patronage.

All that I'll add about the lack of families having fun is this:

Every weekend i went up there to work, the campground has been packed with RV's and trailers with families having fun.

I never indicated that no families go there or don't have fun in the campground. I've never met anyone who goes there just to camp so I guess all the campground improvements have paid off for them. I maintain there would be more family patrons there if the rates were adjusted in favor of family's wheeling together but maybe that's the point to keep children off the trails.
I know they have lost patronage due to this issue based on conversations with other wheelers and groups since all this started. Obviously it is still an issue otherwise it would have not been brought back up, by someone other than me btw.

I am glad there are families who still enjoy the place. As I said earlier, I'm sure it will succeed.

Glad to see changes that are being made. Since the place is local I don't necessarily mind the $15 per rig/driver. Its legal, its local so I deal with it. However to charge that much for passengers is a little overboard. $5 per passenger and give them a different color wrist band or something, who cares.

Come up with a yearly fee and spend a few bucks at a local print shop to have some decals made that you only hand out to those who have paid a yearly fee. It worked for Harlan and they are generating in the 6 figure area per year thanks to this system. If youre asking this much a day at least give us a freakin cool sticker to throw on our rigs not some post-it-note with the date scribbled on it.

Will you teach me pottery???

Thanks alot Ben, now I have the image of Paul cuddled up to you with his arms around you like in the movie with Patrick Swazye.....:flipoff2:

Well I'm glad for the improvements. However if I'm going to drive that far only another 2 hours to harlan. Plus I'm only 2 total from Crozet.

I agree with Jeremy on this. I'm going back to my original statement.

"I'm not poor, but I am cheap"

It's a comparison. I wheel a ton of different places on the east coast. Mtn City is currently the highest price one to go to for me. Especially when you consider I bring 2 boys. That's a fact.

For the $45/day it would cost me I can do an entire weekend at Crozet for $40. That doesn't include the camping fees, because I'm willing to pay for the showers, that's just the wheeling.

If I lived closer I'm sure it would be a different story.

Me and the other half went this past weekend as well. We had to do this trip on a budget, so how about instead of complaining about the price increase, pack your lunch/dinner for the weekend? Just a difference of a couple bucks either way. The lady that was there was super nice and even mentioned that she would've/could've cooked us some breakfast before we headed out.
I enjoy Callalantee and we definitely seen some improvements this weekend!
Will you teach me pottery???
Ben, Alex and I go do pottery in Huntersville about once a week you should join us! :bounce2:

Every weekend i went up there to work, the campground has been packed with RV's and trailers with families having fun.
what was the ratio of rigs vs.atv's ?
are the rates for atv's still less?
i have not been back due to the rate increase and was curious.

Not complaining. Merely stating the facts. In fact I like to see the improvements to the park and it is better overall for the sport.

I do pack all my food for the weekend.:shaking:

I feel so sorry for those of you that would leave Calla off your list because you think its "too expensive" But that sounds fine, too. Less time we spend sitting in line behind broke down "mall crawlers with Dana 35s and 37" tires"!

Stop disrespecting the mall crawlers sucka.

$15 bucks is cheap fun. You can't get a run down crack whore for $15 anymore. I need to get back up and check out the improvements. I don't think i have been in 2 years.

Glad I could help you with trail congestion.:D

I guess Jeremy and I'll go hang out at the Mall.

I like it!

Bliiing!

I'm new here just figured Id fill yall in on just a few pointers

I'm from fla soon to be NC SE area near the bases

#1 all parks or the ones that are still public around here are 15 for the day per person

#2 the parks that allow camping are either 20 or 30 for the weekend

#3 parks that allow trail usage is 25 per day

I totally agree with the pottery thing used to be my job before my current job of 13 yrs went flat. So I'm relocating to NC just out of necessity I keep my job but I have to move on my dime fine I'm not crying about it just a fact of life IMO

I totally agree passengers shouldn't pay near full price nor should family But if the place is as great as it sounds still fair to me IMHO
