Getting ready to hunt

Don't hunt (the blood, guts, skin pulling makes me woozy), but a buddy of mine made something similar. Used a thick piece of steel pipe for a barrel.Used the crank from a trailer to raise/lower the barrel. This was mounted to a trailer axle?? Cool as shit the barrel was just the right size for a Coke can. Very dangerous to play with though..... Last time I spoke to him, he was going to try partially fill a coke can with concrete for a round....

Sweet I need one.........It is kinda like the old punt guns that they used to mount on the front of boats to kill ducks. They would fill em with anything and everything then when about 200 ducks would be feeding on the corn that was thrown in the water the guy would fire the gun and kill a lot of birds.

I killed 2 bucks, a 4 pointer and a cow horn opening day (SC Rifle)
Have since killed a doe and a 6pointer.

Which reminds me.

Anyone here in or around Charlotte want any deer meat?

I literally am letting does walk I would like to harvest from our property (for management reasons) because I have no one to give the venison to and both my freezer and deep freeze are full

Jon, some of us go hunting....some go killing. Just like fishing...some of us go fishing you go catching....

Maybe I am taking this wrong, but...

I spend a LOT of times in the woods.
I have seen over 100 animals this year in stand in kill ranges.
We MANAGE our land (2500 acres) for deer harvest. Does, Second Tier males and dominate bucks are harvested.

I will not kill immature animals, or go on a blood thirst. I could easily have harvested 10 or more deer this past weekend but kept witing for the right animal which never came.

Seems to be some anger used in the difference between hunting and killing...

Or maybe I am totally missing the point here.

Either way to each his own. As for me I like deer, and I like growing trophies.

skyhik5 anytime you want to give away some deer meet i'll take it... especially tenderloins and hams... dont really do shoulders though

Yes it is a joke on him for letting it walk.

Sounds like you have a nice place to hunt, I wish that I had the area you do to hunt then I could watch them and only take the ones you want.

Hunting is killing and killing is part of hunting no anger at all just the fact that there is a lot more to hunting then the kill.
Last year I hunted 30-35 days and did not take a thing and still had fun.
Or maybe I am totally missing the point here.

Yep to each there own I like hunting for the peace you get sitting out in the woods and the fun you have.
I hunt or kill deer to eat, Cant eat the horns and I have no deer heads on the wall, a few that could but are not.
I eat what I kill and thats it, When I get my fill I stop.
Around here they hunt with dogs, to me thats not hunting but They can do what they want.
The dogs will run the deer off all the land and keep them moving, dog hunters have a saying if it is brown its going down. They kill anything and everything then don't use the meet or just give it away, to them its all the kill. I like to still hunt and that is what I do. I use corn as bait like most and sit in a stand to see what comes out. If I pass on a 4 pt then it will go on the truck of the people hunting next to me. There is no way to grow deer without a lot of land.
Think of it this way your 2500 ac is a lot but if I ran dogs and chased the deer off your place on to mine then kill everything would you pass on putting meat on your table if you know they will just kill it to be killing???
I would love to see your way of hunting and as with you coming up to see mine if you want. I would bet its the same other then you have more deer because they only take what they want.
The place around here does the hunters for the hungary and gave something like 40 ton of deer away.
Think of how many deer that is that people killed just to give away...
Jon

Can you clear something up? you have killed a cow horn 4 pt 6 pt and doe but you say this
We MANAGE our land (2500 acres) for deer harvest. Does, Second Tier males and dominate bucks are harvested.
What is a second Tier if its not a cow horn 4pt or 6pt?
Most managed land and clubs around I know of manage by taking doe ,cow horns, and 8pt or bigger.
Which reminds me.

Why do you want to kill deer just to give the meat away?
Sounds like you like killing? I know better your just wanting to thin the herd some....
Try this let someone else hunt and take a doe and doe only.
The fact you have a lot of deer is good take a friend hunting teach them the sport and show others what they are missing.
Find a local boy scout or get up with one of the hunting groups and they will hook you up with someone that you will have a chance to change their life... Who knows..Go to a local VA maybe someone our age just back from the war needs a day out and you could take them hunting....
I have more fun taking someone with me to hunt and let them take one........ But he just will not pull the trigger, Maybe Wed a.m. he will, I hope its a big one.
Have a good day...

I understand you are not putting down this program. But think of how many of those deer would go to waste due to poeple killing and then not having room or taste for the meat. I personaly hunt. Not well, but I enjoy it. I give away alot of my meat. I do this due to not being able to fix it before it will get freezer burn.

To me, if the meat is eaten and put to good use, then why not. I am sure the people who recieve the meat are glad that others are willing to share their harvest with them.

I'm not putting it down it is a good thing, it helps a lot of people and I may do it when I fill up the freezer but I will not go kill just to kill, I will hunt and take the meat I want then pass some on to people that want it or need it.
When they drop it off, for some its all about the kill not the gift they were given. It is all in the way people act. You know they pull up KICK the deer out of the back of the truck and get pissed about the blood then say something like were you want this POS....... Thats hunting to kill.
Jon

Anyone had any luck killing anything this year?
I killed a big ass spider last night. There were 3 freash road kill (2 doe's and a buck) on the road today on my way in to work
I could do well if Bonnie would let me put a tree stand in the back yard. for some reason she does not want me to shoot the yard deer:confused:

Tried the multi quote thing, then just gave up...

#1 2nd tier deer to me are mature bucks with small racks.
The cowhorn I killed was a 4+ year old deer he would never get bigger, however he will continue to fertilize does and have small males. Get rid of him and let the big boys have some action

#2 I LOVE Hunter's for the hungery. I have been pushing for years and have presented 3 times to the SC General Assembly, and the DNR legislature without success to fund a similar program. I have been helping a friend out for years with meat who isnt well off, but he said this year he doesnt want anymore...

#3 I am a member of the SC Hooked On/ Take One Make One program where you take youths thats families are otherwise uninterested hunting and fishing. I was also the youngest person ever designated a mentor in this program in SC at 25 (4 years ago)
But a dual major in wildlife biology and forestry and a lifetime in the woods will do that to you I guess.

#4 My greatest joys in hunting all are around taking others to get there first deer. That is a feeling that if you havent experienced it you cant understand how cool it is. For those who hunt, you know what I mean. However the "President" of our hunting club has enacted a strict no guest rule, and while I understand his logic (the few of us that have this land pay a hefty sum to keep and manage it) I disagree with it.

#5 I would like and plan in the future to organize a private hunters for hungry type program.

The problem is 2 fold.
#1 there is a cost involved. the local processor charges $30 for a process or $50 for a clean and process. While not much it would add up over many animals. I'm sure donations or funding could resolve this
#2 Legislature around both the restriction of selling venison (they consider it a sell even when given away through a commercial program) and FDA regulations around processing centers. 99% of your game processors dont meet FDA requirements for resell but are fine for direct service.

If anyone has any info or contacts and wants to help here PM me...

When she going to be out we could have a killing..........HEHE:bounce: :shaking:

Last year I had a left over bag of corn and I put it out behind the fence and 2 days later there was nothin left but tracks. it look like a herd came though there :D

I could probibly take one down from the back window of the shop with my bow :)

I know that in NC they do it as a tax write off, you drop the deer off at a NCHFH place and they clean prep and send it to different places to be used.
SO from what you have said SC will not do it so maybe check if you can drop of SC deer to a NC cleaner and maybe in the winter (cold for transport) you could do a few for that and get something started.
Also some times church cook outs and other can use the meat but no money must change hands.
Its like if I pay 80$ to have one preped and then take it to friends and say it cost $80 so you can have 50% for $40 that is the same as selling it.No part of a NC wild game can be sold or traded. I was trying to get info on making Knifes and the handles are from NC deer then sell it to someone, would cost me my lifetime lic. along with a good fine.
I can make your deer horn into a knife and handle and charge for the steel work but not mine and then sell it.
I can give them away for free just like the meat and thats it.
Good luck getting a hunters food program up and running.

Let me know when and we can tag team it for sure we could drop him faster. OR do the shot from inside the building, it would be a big tree stand but cut the noise down....:shaking:
