I've got a question for those of you that have done this. I've got an 88 XJ that I'm going to swap the AX-15 into. It's from a 96 XJ. My question is will I have any problem using the 96 flywheel, clutch and crank position sensor? I also have a 231J TC to go with it so no problem with the spline count.

Maybe I left out some info. My XJ is an 88 4.0L with the BA-10 5 speed. The shitty one in the early models that no one wants. The reason I asked is the flywheel, clutch kit and crank sensor have different part numbers from what mine came with. I need to know what is interchangable. I have the tranny, flywheel, clutch kit, crank sensor, slave cylinder and master cylinder from the 96. Thats what I plan to use but want to know if I'm going to run into any trouble with the flywheel and is the sensor from the 96 going to work on mine.

Awww hell. I had AX5 on the brain. That link doesnt help at all.lol I'm pretty sure you use all the parts for the AX15, cps, flywheel and plate. The cps from the 15 will work with what you have in there. Swap everything from crank back. Does your ax15 bellhousing use the internal or external slave?

I am pretty sure your pilot bearing on the BA10 is different than the AX15. It is a small but critical part.

depends, ax-15's had 2 sizes of input snouts, one is exactly the same as the ba-10, and one is bigger. I did this swap about 3 years ago, forgot alot since then, but do yourself a favor and build a custom transmisson mount, which will help tie in the unibody

the stock ba-10 mount is completely different from the ax-15 mount. I adapted the ax-15 mount to the ba-10 crossmember because it wasnt my jeep, guy was on a budget, anyway the mount was a pain in the ass

uh, you'll also run into the problem with the tone rings on the flywheels being different!! You will likely need to use the BA10 flywheel+pressure plate and AX15 clutch disc, in order to get the correct signal for the injectors/ignition. unless you've got the motor harness and intake to make it a HO injection/ignition system.. lots of work there. CPS pickup sensor has a different connector too.

So I got started today and realized the issues y'all are talking about. The pilot baring is inside of a sleeve in the crank and wouldn't budge. My intent was to use everything from the 96 but the CPS has a broken wire so I would have to buy a new one and its not going to work with my harness anyway so I guess I'll probably be using the old flywheel and CPS and new clutch. I just don't understand the pressure plate not working with the old flywheel. Is the bolt pattern different or what. I didn't look at that yet.

idk if it is or not. easy to check though.

You can measure the input shaft for the pilot bearing while the trannys are out to see if they are the same. If not, Autozone will rent you the puller free.
