FML: AX15 Wont Go Into Gear

Yeah, the transmission is bad.

So, I haven't searched for anything regarding this but I have quickly (very very quickly) glanced through the FSM... How difficult would it be to go in and do a rebuild on this transmission? I'm sure I'm capable (I'm a mechanical engineering student, 5th year wooo! I have done extensive suspension work on my BMW along with electrical stuff. I've also built up the long block stroker for my jeep including replacing tappets and the camshaft, as well as a 5" lift, axle swap and SYE on my old jeep), but the real question is how much am I going to bitch and cuss at this thing to get it done? Also, about how long will it take me to do?

Does anyone have a link to a really explanatory DIY for this?

Thank you in advance, I appreciate the help guys.

i had something similar happen to my YJ ax15 a few months back. it would drive fine, then all of a sudden i would shift gears and it wouldn't go in any gear. all it would have was neutral. it wouldn't even shift gears when the engine was off. it was intermittent then if i'd let it sit a while or mess with the clutch it would go back to driving normally after a while (after a day or so). i changed my clutch master cylinder and it works perfectly now. it's a $60 part. it's way cheaper than a tranny. if it is the clutch master cylinder a new tranny won't fix your problem. it's just my 2 cents.

The transmission is on the ground, out of the car, by itself and will not go into gear. Clearly not a clutch master problem.

I would PM transman731 ,I assure you he can get it straightened out for you.

Took it to lee today. He had it torn down in about 10 minutes. The transmission was sticking in 5th gear so he pulled the 5th gear syncro and the 5th gear. Turns out the gear was cracked straight through on one side so it was expanded and sticking inside of the selector gear.

Another question that I'm curious about regarding the transmission/clutch:

To get the clutch to disengage I had to go all the way to the floor. And by all the way I mean like stand on it... Neither the master or slave is leaking and the fluid is full. I will say that the pivot for the pedal looks as though it was supposed to be welded but it appears that the weld had cracked and there was a little bit of rotational play at the pivot... I'm not sure that this is the problem because I don't think the pivot does anything other than provide a pivot point. I also know that the clutch itself is fairly new, it had a lot of meat on it when I replaced the motor.

All of the fingers for the pressure plate look fine, some of them are a slight bit taller than others but the difference is maybe 3mm at most between shortest and longest. By this I mean in the axis of the input shaft.

EDIT: Okay I went out and looked at it. There is a plastic spacer piece that is on the slave cylinder that sits between it and the bellhousing. Is this piece necessary? If not, that removing it could probably fix this. It's about 3/16" thick. Also, at the pivot for the pedal, the lever that connects to the shaft of the master cylinder doesn't appear to be connected to the sleeve for the pedal. It looks as though there is a tack weld there that may have cracked causing some play. The first 3/4" of pedal travel doesn't seem to move the master cylinder shaft. I guess I could remove this and weld it back together?

ax-15 problem

I had the same exact problem with my xj, i replaced my clutch and still had a problem. replaced my master and slave cylinder and still had a problem. replaced my pilot bearing and still had a problem. i finally fix my problem when i changed my u joint on my drive shaft. my u-joints were so bad that my drive shaft twisted a quarter of a inch, i had six more miles on my u-joints before it was going to break. glad i replaced it when i did and knock on wood my shifting is so smooth.
