Really, Lift Laws in NC?

Read the actual NC laws...

§ 20‑135.4. Certain automobile safety standards.

(a) Definitions. – For the purposes of this section, the term "private passenger automobile" shall mean a four‑wheeled motor vehicle designed principally for carrying passengers, for use on public roads and highways, except a multipurpose passenger vehicle which is constructed either on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off‑road operation.

(b), (c) Repealed by Session Laws 1975, c. 856.

(d) The manufacturer's specified height of any passenger motor vehicle shall not be elevated or lowered, either in front or back, more than six inches by modification, alteration, or change of the physical structure of said vehicle without prior written approval of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.

On or after January 1, 1975, no self‑propelled passenger vehicle that has been so altered, modified or changed shall be operated upon any highway or public vehicular area without the prior written approval of the Commissioner. (1971, c. 485; 1973, cc. 58, 1082; 1975, c. 856.)

From this, those donks with the huge wheels and scary looking lifts are not legal, we are. Not to mention, the 6" is not just for the lift...If you have 4" of lift and went from 31" tires to 35" tires, you are now 6" taller than before, the added height from the tire is calculated in as well.

It's not enforced. However, the people running around with the huge lifts and tires may eventualy cause the rest of us problems down the road.

How if they are not doing anything illegal? Anything constructed on a truck frame or multipurpose offroad rig is exempt from that law. I do agree it should be enforced on some of those rolling deathtraps out there though...

Basically as long as you are still under 13'-6" (monster truck status, I'm still under 8' with 10" of lift and 38s.), and no wider than 102" you are legal. And NC has no fender or headlight height laws, except that the brightest portion of your beam cannot be higher than 42" 75 feet from the vehicle, therefore, the higher you go, the further you aim them down.

So from reading the link that you just posted, where does it say anything about lifts being limited to 6 inches?

to the OP, at least read the text in the link you posted :shaking:
There are no suspension modification laws in North Carolina for trucks or multi-purpose vehicles with special features for occasional off-road use.
