I have a spot in my yard that smells just like a barn. I looked around to see if there was something there that would make it smell like that but there was nothing. So I poked a stick in the ground and found it's the actual soil that smells like that. This has only just become a problem because one of my dogs will not stay away from it and now he smells the same. The rest of the yard is fine and I make sure all of the dog crap gets picked up so it's not that. I live in a neighbourhood so there isn't a barn anywhere close to my house. Right now I could care less what is making it smell like that I just want to know how to get rid of it. Any advise would be great.

I'm not sure if there is a septic system in place but it wouldn't be out of the question seeing as the house is 80+ yrs. old. I'm on city sewer right now so I'll have to call the landlord about it and see what they say. Now, what course of action do I need to take to get it taken care permanently? How long would the Lime work ( I'm assuming for the smell )? I've never had to deal with something like this but I can't have my dog constantly smelling like barn.
 
Ive never heard of one smelling in that way. But it isnt outside of the realm of possibility. I dont see your landlord wanting to spend the money on having an old septic system removed. It could cost as much as $10,000 or more to dig it all up and have it disposed of properly and refilled and re seeded. And if you use the type of lime that will kill the smell, it will also probably burn and kill the grass. I think youll just have to live with it.

Well the spot where the smell is, is towards the back of the yard in one corner. I don't think it would my septic if that is what it is. There is a house about 7' (give or take) from the fence that may have a septic. This is also a spot that doesn't have any grass on it and probably never will since I am going to use that spot for something else. I will probably just tear up the ground there, put the lime in place, and go from there.
 
Well I found out where the smell was coming from and it has nothing to do with a septic. I have this giant stump that I started to cut up today and while I was cutting into it I realised that it is rotted on the inside. The stupid dog likes to dig at the stump ( no idea why ) and that is why he stunk. Of course the other spot that I thought the soil was stinking was actually dog crap that was buried in the brush. I found this out yesterday since I have been trying to tame my backyard and found multiple landmines the kids missed during their every other day landmine sweep. Problem solved no digging or lime needed.

Pour some wvo on it & get some firewood. Build a fire & stoke it for a few days. Remove as much as the ash as you can. it will create lye in the soil. fillin with dirt & plant seed..
 
I'm actually going to use this stump as a fire pit. Since the hole goes pretty deep and I want a fire pit anyway I'm going to cut the center out in a circle ( or as close as I can get to a circle ) and build a deck around it. The deck will be octagon shape and have a removable center with a grate underneath it and a spit that will be removable for big meat roasting for 4th of July and other such types of get together. Or for nothing but the enjoyment of sitting outside near and open fire at night.
 
I may have to copy your idea, I have a great place for fires but its on a slope and I'd rather not grade or make it flatter w a wall.
