anyone have any opinion/experience as to which is the more capable off roader?

I think the Ford F-450 rollback that will be recovering both of those is probably gonna do better offroad.

Neither?

But if I had to choose one, I'd almost say the liberty?
The little libbies with some common sense seem to do OK? I don't think I've ever seen a new Grand out on the trails?
But I really hesitate to call either of them a "capable off roader"

I take that back, I have seen one of the new Grands stuck in the sand at the beach?
Does that count?

I dont see why either with a small lift and some tires to give it some traction and ground clearance couldnt be a fairly decent weekend warrior. While an IFS rig will generally not be as capable as a simlar solid axle rig, either one of those vehicles will do fine offroad if driven with some sense and trail smarts.

Personal opinion if you are buying something knowing its going offroading, get the cheaper of the two. No sense in putting an extra $10k down a trail if both vehicles suit your other needs.

I have wheeled with IFS ever since i got my liscense. With some decent tires and barely enough lift to fit them you can have a fairly capable rig. Traction is key so remember lockers and you will be suprised where you can go.

Rental?

Pay for the insurance and both will be fine.

hammer it til your ass is sitting on dirt, then use a cell phone

the rental GC's are often the awd version that has no center diff lock or low range, so watch out for that.

I *think* if you get a liberty 4x4 it will always have low range.

depending how far the trip is...NO WAY I'd take a highway trip in one of the newer Grands...

the TJ has more room in the front seat...

both have "real" 4wd.

i've rented several 4wd's on trips before, but usually prices dictate only one choice. there's only a few dollars difference between these two, so i'm trying to decide which would be better for my off highway traveling.

Rented a new GC when I was out west summer or two ago. Did a lot of light beating on it around Moab, and a few "4WD only" roads in Colorado with no problems at all. The 4.7 V8 got 20-23mpg, and had no problem getting over 100.

well, their only 4wd gc was taken so i got an even further discount on the liberty. works for me.

thanks for the replies.

I had the same experience with my dads GC. He is 5'8 or so and it fits him good but i rub my head on the roof with the seat as low to the floor as it will go and leaned back to give me max room (i am around 5'11). You can forget it if you are over 6'.

in case anyone cares, the liberty did surprisingly well. i'd say better than a gc would have. here it is on behind the rocks in moab.

with some creative pedal work and momentum, it did about everything i asked of it. did several 2-3 rated trails. worked on the undercarriage a bit in spots, but that's it. even made a high speed run on the salt flats, lol:
