1984 DJ5 revival

Just asking ....
Have you done a good, old fashioned plug check?

Yep....when I got it. They looked very recent, but were showing signs of running lean and were not gapped properly.

I cleaned the plugs, gapped them, got the carb rebuilt from a carb rebuilding company, and it ran 70% better. Once I 'nuttered' it, it runs 95% better.

18" of Hg

One vacuum line to dizzy, tuned the timing by ear (no stumbles at idle and no knocking under accel)

adjusted idle to 900ish

Still wants to idle way down and stumble occasionally in gear, mainly reverse. When I put it in reverse and immediatly press the gas pedal, it will stumble but catch back up.
The stumble is not as bad, or as often, when going into drive

When I ramp up the RPMs while looking at the motor, it will start to miss/shake the engine every second or so at 2500ish RPMs and continue to miss while holding that RPM

But at idle, its smooth

However, I put it in drive and accelerate moderatly, it goes and shifts fine through all the gears and will accelerate up hills OK for a 40 year old 4cyl

Not changed cap and rotor yet, or wires yet..they look new, but may replace them cause its cheap

I've loosened the dizzy and twisted it CW and CCW to make sure it was a smooth as it can be at idle.

I'm assuming the vac advance is working

I'm also assuming that the advance that used to be adjusted by the emissions computer will not make that big of a difference now that its disconnected.....as most people that have done the Nutter bypass don't change their dizzy

In the interim, replaced a sticking front wheel cylinder (drums all around), added a working temp gauge, and added an add a leaf and new shocks at all corners. The rear is about 2" over stock, front is about an inch over stock.

Added a true 2" leaf pack to the front, from a 70-75 CJ5. It now sits level.

Also, I need to get the steering box rebuilt, any recommendations for that?
.
Thanks!

Oh, and 'nutterd' it and it runs much better.

still wants to stumble and occasionaly die at light throttle, like when backing out of the driveway, but at this point I'll try and tackle that this winter.....along with trying to upgrade the brakes,
Replace the accerlator pump it is probably harden some and slow to push fuel till you get the pedal mashed down further and causing it to stumble before getting enough fuel to match the air interduce to the motor .

I'll investigate....i sent the carb off for a professional rebuild in June.

However the accelerator pump not functioning properly does seem like the culprit.

I used to be real good on carbs 30 years ago but since fuel injection i haven't touch one in several years. I have forgotten more than i can remember now on carbs.

I'd love to add a basic AFI kit on it, but I'm trying to keep this thing cheap and simple.

I don't need a $10k DJ that is worth $5k.

cries in poor......
You're missing the point of this hobby.

But then again you don't have a spare tire so I guess you are too poor/cheap to do it the right way.

HA!
I'm already upside down.....I'll bleed, but slowly

Also, tires are next! And I'lll be buying 5.

I can't decide if I want to step up to 15" wheels or stay with 14" (whats on it now, 5x4.5 bolt pattern)
