1998 Jeep Cherokee

BUT I THINK THE GRAND IS HIDEOUS AND RIDE LIKE A BOAT...MY PARENTS HAD A 96 THE SAME TIME I HAD AN 89 XJ...EVEN MY DAD PREFERRED MINE OVER THEIR GRAND..

THE XJ FEELS MORE OFF ROADISH TO ME...

well then get it then...

there you have it..get the xj

If you trim, you can run 31's with little rubbing. This is my friends I did for him. Stock suspension, trimming, and 31x10.5

You will rub the tires on the control arms regardless of lift unless you get wheel spacers. But if you adjust the steering stops that takes care of it, and you can tuck up into the fenderwell a lot more with the stock backspacing vs rubbing the flares with spacers

Definitely get the XJ and not the Grand... Grands are for moms to cart the kids around in... IMO... But the trimming option doesn't look bad and he's right, even with a lift you rub 31s on the arms.

you guys are so helpful
thank you

Another question...If I remove the fender flares and get spacers...will I be OK?

Or

If I remove the fender flares...will the spacers even be needed?

As stated before, a lift or trimming will let you run the 31s comfortably without rubbing the FENDERS but you will still rub the control arms when you turn your steering wheel all the way to the right or left in a maneuver like backing out of a parking space or the infamous 10-point turn that is bound to happen in the woods. I had a 3" lift on my 98 XJ Sport and I just learned not to turn my steering wheel all the way to one side. Even with 3" my rear suspension would compress and rub on the inner lip of the well. I attribute this to the brand of lift, Rough Country. You get what you pay for. If you are going to buy a suspension lift I suggest a Rubicon Express.
The ONLY way to not rub the control arms with 31x10.50 is to either to adjust the steering stops OR get wheel spacers. But if you just learn not to rub then rubbing the control arms is not that big a deal. Just be careful with BFG MT not to rip off a tread lug.
Sounds like your getting a 2" kit with wheel spacers.

Grand is pretty much same requires trimming or 2 inch lift to run 31s I ran 32s on my grand with Just small 2" budget boost lift and upcountry springs with very little rubbing on the control arms if turned steering all the way just have to watch the edge of the fender if you discoed the sway bar or a tire lug would just about catch it and bend it. To adjust steering stops is not a prob just put couple washers behind the bolts or get some longer ones with a jam nut. Did manage to rip the fender lining out when I flex it hard one time and just threw it in the back and never reinstalled it.

ok im gonna rant for a second.........mostly because im tired of hearing the same stuff...

1. If you like the 31's and ur asking about cutting.....Buy the 2inch kit for around 100.00 take the 30-45mins to put it on and trim the fenders nicley....you will be much happier that route than buying a spacer and having the whole rear end sag and look like shit when you load ur car full of kitties and a BOAT. you WILL NEED the shackles if your going to be hauling something.

2. the grand would fit you better. no worry on lift and would pull fine.

3. if it was me heres the route i would go........
clean fender trim
2inch BB kit ( i would recomend for towing and full of people due to the SAG you will have....)
245 mtrs and a set of rubis.

then you will have a super clean looking cherokee perfect for DD use and very able to tow a boat/kids/camping etc......( sell the 31's on there if your worried about not having any cash for lift. rubi takeoffs can be found cheap and a BB is super cheap. then you will have a jeep you can use and not worry about rubbing and etc.....

I recently installed a 3" BB on my son's 89 Cherokee, as well as 31" Hankooks on stock wheels. I'm getting fender rub on passenger side fender, (you can see in one of the pics where it has bent the fender) but nothing major.
Bought it about 2 yrs. ago for 300.00. My son is 14 & has really enjoyed it.
Here's before & after:
