OK...
I'm puzzled...why is the towing capacity on a 98 XJ 2000lbs???
I thought these things used to be rated to pull 5000lbs!!!
What gives...crappier parts? Thinner metal? Jeep trying to evade paying for repairs if you break it?
OK...Edmunds must be full of :poop:

If you go through the other model years, the spec are identical(ie the 1997 has all the same specs, but can tow 5000lbs)
Editors should be ashamed...or did Jeep do something to build quality in 98 that killed everything because 98 on up, the max tow capacity is 2000 lbs...

nah for rreal..they did start using thinner metal..

Found another site that rates it at 5000lbs as well...
MSN clears it up for me...200lbs standard towing with 5000lbs max towing

My dad towed a 1951 Mercury "Lead Sled" from Cary to Hickory with an 88. That was a fun trip...not so much the going as the stopping...especially when someone cuts in front of you when you're going 55mph...

6500lbs for the grand cherokee w/ the v8
10,000lbs if you use snake oil in the crankcase

Now I need a response from 90jeepman as to whether I need to buy a hitch for his or if it has one on there...

Are you sure you're thinking the Cherokee (XJ) for 5000lbs? the Grand Cherokee (ZJ) is rated for 5000-5500 depending on options.

hhhmmmm, D35 BIGASS axle and brakes ..... Personally I wouldn't put more than 2000 behind either. Maybe a little more on the ZJ, but certainly not 5000. hell the curb weight isn't but 5000.

I used to have a '99 Cherokee Sport for a work vehicle. We would regularly tow around 4k and it did fine. If at all possible, make sure the trailer has brakes. It will get the trailer moving easily, but stopping, especially in a panic situation, can be sketchy.

Again...I'm pulling a 17' Renken. I don't think it weigs 5000lbs..i was just saying...

Believe me 360...I'm trying...he just hasn't been responding to my emails or PMs

I had a 1991 XJ and I tried to Tow my 1979 21' tahiti Day Crusier. Not sure how much it weighed but I do not think it was over 5000.

It pushed me around like crazy. I never could get the balls to try it on the freeway. It was a white knuckle ride at best on the side roads.

a regular XJ is around 2000 lbs. of towing because of the crappy d35 rear axle. That axle is a time bomb when stress. if you have the d44 or the 8.25 then you're good for an easy 5000 lbs.
