I have been told I need a wireless router to get internet on both computers haveing only one motem.

I have one cable line dedicated to internet, any suggestions on the correct router to purchase?

We download movies, music, surf & ofcourse my addiction to NC4x4.

Thanks

I have a Linsky's at home and run 2 desktops and a lap top. I believe it cost us around $70 2 years ago and will run up to 4 CPUs

linksys will be your most common and probably easy to use router. They are far cheaper now than they were a few years ago, just look around online and find a decent wireless one. I've never seen a "wireless only" router, but if you're using a desktop you need one with ethernet ports.

Then read the manual and set up some sort of password.

I have seen wireless only routers.

The new thing now is to have the modem actually BE the router. We dont have a router here, just the modem that can wirelessly transfer signals.

Do you need the second computer to be wireless? Some modems have a space to hook up more than one computer if your using a cable.

Alright knowing how good you are with a welder and how much you like bacon....not sure if this is a recomendation or tech question thread. If this is too basic weld some bacon between two pieces of brread and get ovver it.

1- If your cable modem provided by the company only has 1 output and you want to run two computers you need a router.
2- If it is 2 desktops you want connected you will need to run cabling from the 2 pc locations to the router and from the cable modem to the router
3- If one of the computers if a laptop or you have a wii, blackberry, iphone, wireless dvd server etc. you need a router with wireless capabilities.
4- Linksys makes some fairly crappy products, but they are cheap, widely available and so common that they ae almost universally supported.
5- If you go wireless only your desktops may not support wifi and you may have to add hardware. Some newer ones have it built it, for me I would want it hardwired, a lil faster and less headaches
6- If I was looking this is what I would buy:

7- For ultra cheap: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=506421&CatId=373
8- If refurb scares you away, best buy should have this on the shelf

Now spend lots of time here while I go sell some of my gun collection in misc

you made me have to go to google to re learn how to spell "modem"

Sky pretty much covered all the bases, but more info from you would really help. Better description of your set up....

what have you been doing for internet on both computers and what changed that you now need wireless?

I using a Netgear at the office and it has its moments.
Using the supplied wireless router / modem at home and it works great. I have zero issues.

The combo ones they usually charge you a monthly networking fee, or they did with us while we had ours. It was like 10 dollars a month.

I bought it out right :huggy:

Yeah It was an option. We got it free with the Xtreme DSL Package, Wife works from home and needed the static ip for login to her office. The Ip comes with the xtreme package and they charge you on the lesser packages.

Your correct I can't spell & some times I forget to use spellcheck.:shaking:

2 computers side by side. The rest is nonya

A crossover cable between the 2 lan ports on the pc's is the easiest thing to do if possible.

I personally like D-link. I've used Linksys, among others, and D-link's stuff works great and has proven the easiest to set up for the average Joe user. That may be different now, though, as technology changes daily. I'd trust them over Linksys, though. Don't forget to pick up a couple of wireless USB recievers for your computers, though, unless it's built in.

its all good. dont feel bad. you ever read a word that you know is spelled wrong....but now that youve seen it wrong you cant remember how to spell it right?

A crossover cable between the 2 lan ports on the pc's is the easiest thing to do if possible.

1.)A crossover cable between the two NICs would enable the computers to share information (crate a mini LAN between the 2 computers) but wouldn't allow for internet use.

2.)I was going to say something stupid like run 2 NICs in one computer and then connect the 2 computers with a crossover cable. And connect the internet to the computers with the 2 NICs and somehow use it as a server to provide internet access to the other single NIC computer. But the above post would make that redundant, and sort of upped the ante on the stupid part.

If you are trying to connect to the modem with a laptop or some other wireless device. To save time and headache trying to set all that up just get a wired router since the two computers are right next each other. Any one of these will work for you. Plus you get better speeds if both comps are hardwired.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...0000028&Description=router&name=Wired Routers

doing the crossover is the cheapest route to take since the most you will need to buy is a couple of nic's, and you can actually have internet on both doing this but it's kind of a pain to setup if you don't know how. I have a wireless router only because I have a laptop that uses it, but, if I didn't have the laptop I wouldn't have the wireless router.

I'd go ahead and get a wireless N router. You may not use the wireless now, but you probably will in the future. Stick with Linksys or D-Link and you'll be fine. Be sure to secure your wireless network. The manual that comes with the router will tell you how to do it.

Thanks guys

:confused:Hay!!!!!! I thought you guys were talking about a battery powered wood working tool, I was looking at my Craftsman Catalog for some page #s to give you and came back to this! LOL
