Seems like the perfect truck. Can tow over 6 tons, and should have a small enough diesel to get decent fuel mileage (though I'd prefer that they had a 4-4.5 liter inline 6 with similar torque numbers). Integrated gooseneck ball is a nice touch. It'll be interesting to see pricing since Nissan seems to be more competitive than some of the other Japanese brands.

I hope they've got some real brakes on that truck. I drove an 05 crewcab 4x4 w a fiberglass shell and maybe 500lbs in the back for several years and the brakes were weak even after a recall to replace the original front rotors/calipers.

That thing has been in the works for a while, Yota has a new half ton Tundra set to debut with the same engine this year as well.

The legal evolution of this whole thing is fascinating for those that like to study business. In short Cummins set out to find new partners during the dark days leading up to the bail out as it looked like Dodge was going away. For years there was (and is) an exclusive contract to use Cummins in ONLY dodge 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. Well in those days there was considerable interest from Toy and Nissan to create a 3/4 and 1 ton platform so deals were negotiated. Obama bails Dodge out and Cummins gets back money owed. Cummins says by defaulting on your bills and being co-owned by the .gov you void our contract. It gets into an arbitrator where Dodge argues their advertising made Cummins brand stronger. Cummins counters that Dodge only advertised their name because the Cummins brand was better than the Dodge brand and affiliation with the Cummins name sold Dodge trucks. Ultimately they parted ways and still honored the contract. Contract dont say a damn thing about half ton trucks.

Here we are.

bingo

Towing 12k on 6-lug wheels. What the hell does 1/2 ton even mean anymore?!?

It looks like a good idea on paper, but Nissan needs to get their act together and make a decent truck to wrap around the motor. I can't think of anyone I know that owned a Titan and liked it. Sure, they're cheaper than a Toyota, but they don't tow well and the brakes suck, like mommucked said. We've needed something like this for a long time, though.

Toyota diesel should sell well. The Dodge 1/2 ton diesel is selling like crazy, they can't keep up with demand. I wish Ford would have gone ahead with their 1/2 ton diesel plans.

One day I will put a 12V Cummins in my F350

My boss towed a 4000lb generator w that 05 Titan once................................once was apparently too many times o_O

Here it is!

Not sure when these guys will figure out that a half ton truck simply is not made to haul 2,000 lbs in the bed or 12,000 lbs on a trailer. You have tires worthy of a passenger car rating, small brakes (although Tundra is pretty decent), no decent overload setup, etc. It just is not safe. Sure the engines can pull them but everything else is very sketchy at that weight. Same reason I would not pull 30,000 lbs with a 2wd Dodge Cummins, that is well out of class 3 truck territory. I'm sure that a half ton truck which is set up to ride like a little bitch wagon cannot haul that safely.

Then you have the initial cost of the diesel option, having to play the DEF fluid and DPF cat games with all the associated check engine lamps and dealer visits, and that engine looks like it is shoe horned in there. I wouldn't want to have to service it just like any other class 3 truck with a diesel these days. Those engines are made to fit something with a rotating fiberglass hood. I hate to say it but with the price of diesel being 50% higher than gas, I don't think it pays to own this truck. It doesn't pay to own a diesel 1 ton unless you use it consistently everyday to work.

The 5.0 V was designed exclusively for the light duty truck market from the ground up.

This is what I come back to everytime I think I would like to have a diesel.

So they placed most of it under the windshield cowling? :)

any idea what it weighs?
any further forward and you'd compromise NHTSA crash test data.

Link says it has 14" diameter brakes. Sure theres a lot of information missing there, but rotor diameter is a big indicator of braking power.

Half ton trucks these days are as good or better in the braking/frame/suspension departments as 3/4+ton trucks of the late 90's and probably even early 2000's. The biggest thing they lack is mass, which is important when you have a heavy bumper pull trailer. But a 12klb gooseneck behind a 6klb truck seems more proportionate than a 30klb gooseneck behind a 7klb"1 ton".

That's adorable. But do you think your wife will let you borrow it?
Blahblahblah My truck has a "C" on the front fender blahblahblah look at my tow mirrors blahblahblah

Personally I LIKE the titans. I used to rent a Titan to pull my old K5 on 38's to Mountain City before I owned a tow rig. It would pull 421 at 55mph and get 10-11 mpg's doing it. Maybe they do have small brakes compared to other current half tons; but I can assure you that it stopped better with my blazer in tow than any of the 90's fords or gm trucks that I would borrow at the time. I did't buy one only because a new titan was not in my budget. Instead I bought a 95 GMC dually. I will say the dually was more stable than the titan,(but not by much), but the titan pulled and stopped better. Until the new titan is out, I won't pass judgement on it, but the looks and description of it appeal to me.

Well I like it. I don't ever want an automatic, however. At least the rear axle is up to snuff this time. The Dana 44 they have in the current Titan was always a joke. I do have a buddy that loves his '08 and tows a lot with it. Never gives him a lick of trouble. My '14 Chevy 1500 can easily out pull it though.. I am interested to see what the gas drive train is going to be. The VK56DE has not had any major revisions in years.

I know about 4 or 5 other people that use Titans to tow with and no one really complains about them. Usually just pulling average car haulers with rigs on them.

Envy is a cardinal sin.
Blahblahblah I drive a Cummins blahblahblah I can tow 46,281,423.64 pounds blahblahblah People envy me blahblahblah
I believe Pride is one of those cardinal sins also, and remember, my wife's Nissan has a Cummins too :flipoff2:

I've used a Titan (one of the King cab, super short-bed Pro 4x models) to haul my 4Runner a few times. Never any problems really. Of course we used a trailer w/ brakes and a brake controller.

I want to know what the hell is wrong w/ a smaller 1/4-ton or 1/2 ton pickup truck. Great for guys that don't haul big loads, just do trips to hardware store a lot, help people move, etc. They've basically vanished.
I love my '93 Toy Extra cab... there is no modern replacement.

Heard an interesting article on US trucks on NPR last night - supposedly 90% of Ford's profit comes from their trucks. They just sell cars as a side job. Had no idea.

Thats why I was pretty stoked to see the new Chevy Colorado diesel, until I saw the new $45k price tag.

When we were looking at SUV's for my wife a couple months ago, Toyota 4runners were in the $40k range, and comparable Nissan Pathfinders were in the $28k range, so hopefully this Titan comes out cheaper than the Colorado, so that lots of people will buy them, so that I can get one cheap in about 5 years :D

I am with you on this. Word is the new Nissan Frontier will downsize a little bit, but not back to actual compact truck size. Ford's F-series could be an entire car company on its own, they sold 753,851 of them last year. That is more than the VW Group, BMW-Mini, Daimler, and Jaguar-Land Rover.
