2019 Silverado

The new folding tailgate was obviously designed by people who who drive cars. If you have a trailer hitch and try to fold it down to its step form, the ball hits the tailgate just above the handle and will dent it.

My thought is, don't unfold the tailgate if you have a hitch in. #immaproblemsolver

So pretty much never going to get folded down...

I always leave my hitch in the truck.

For the minority of guys that constantly have a hitch in, correct. I look at it this way...when is the last time you ever stopped to think 'man I wish I had a step to get in the bed of my truck'...if you have, and you have a trailer hitch in, use the hitch as the step...if you don't have a hitch, this is the tailgate for you...if you've never had that thought, it's moot. Like most trucks these days, they're not designed for the minority of guys who are going to use them, they're living rooms on wheels so soccer moms can drive them too.

It already has steps in the lower corners of the bumper, so that's not even an issue. They even shaped the stake pockets to make a comfortable hand hold when using them. I have the same type of steps on my Colorado and use them all the time with the tailgate up and the tailgate down.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around what the advantage of that tailgate is, except to step directly forward instead of from the side, but then you don't have anything to hold when you do (better have good balance and not be carrying much).

How do you use the hitch as a step when the tailgate is down?

You don’t put the tailgate down at all. Hitch, bumper, leg over the top.
Until you get out of the bed and your foot slips and your shin scrapes all the way to the ground while your other leg is still on top of the tailgate and you fall backward on to your tail bone.

Get better balance and coordination??? Go over the side of the bed using the tire??? Ask someone who was getting into beds of trucks before the invention of tailgate steps??? Unless you’re in Harlan, then historical know how no longer applies.

Just get a Ford with the step already built into the tailgate along with a grab bar, if needed.

I guess GM thinks they have to come up with some over the top solution to a problem that’s been solved already.
Eh, I'd much prefer the bumper steps of the Chevy to the awkward, heavy step of the Ford.

beat me to it.

I wouldn't call the tail gate step heavy. Ford's is definitely a better design, which, of course, the Chevy is designed to be as close to the same as possible without infringing on patents/design.

I don't really understand the need for the folding tailgate or a step.

Then you're really gonna struggle with the solution to a problem no one had that Dodge came up with

Hey now... they really built that tailgate to allow you to put a 4x8 sheet of plywood in, while leaving the tailgate up. The step feature was just extra. Or atleast that is what they would likely tell you.

The step itself is not heavy, but the total assembly makes the tailgate weigh about twice what a standard tailgate weighs.

Honestly this is the best design of the 3 for my purposes. Easy to reach in, can carry long stuff and still have a closed cargo area, won't hit the hitch, but still retains traditional tailgate functionality when needed.
I agree. I like it. I've always been a GM fan, but my next truck will probably be a Jeep or Ram...

Have you ever lifted a ford tail gate with the step that the "assist" was broken on? HOLY Fawk its heavy.

Also, sliding in pallets with that awful hump that hold the grab bar is pretty bad to. The entire concept could use some refining. I think GM had the right idea here. If you used a B&W hideaway hitch, you would get the best of both worlds. You might be broke, but it would work

FYI you can remove the assist handle and sell it on eBay for $80 https://www.ebay.com/itm/232651768654
And replace it with a $40 standard tailgate panel.Compatible Aftermarket Gate Access Cover - Get All Parts
That also makes the tailgate lighter, and completely eliminates the stupid hump.

I did this to mine right before I had it Line-X'd, so it bonus points for it matching.

That ram split tailgate looks useful for shoving pallets in with a forklift.

I've installed many dents in tailgates with a forklift.

The GM split folding tailgate might make it easier to reach stuff, but the Ram one is even better for that. I dig the bedside cargo compartments too. I wonder if anyone makes a camper shell that you can hinge up the side above that bedside compartment so you could have a camper and still use it.
