2020 Mahindea Thar

My father has a 55hp mahindra tractor.....if the jeep knock-offs are 3x better than the tractor.....I would still pass!

Just like all the junk coming out of China and India, model year to model year parts mix and design changes means the vehicles quickly becoming unservicable.....and the dealer support is shit on a good day.

If I could pick one up for $1,000 I would rock it only putting in fuel until the engine stopped running or the wheels fell off.

I actually have had pretty good experiences with Mahindra tractors, and if I recall correctly, they move the most tractors globally. I liken them to Kia, their initial claim to fame in the US was the sub-$10k car...they were what they were, a cheap solution, the buyer shouldn't have had any delusions of what they were buying. 2-3 decades later though, they're starting to grab some of that $60k/car market share. Similarly, Mahindra is starting to grab some of that domestic top tier JD/MF/etc piece of the pie with their new innovation/introductions over the last 5 years.

So their dive into the SxS market should be viewed as a disposable product (initially) and then MAYBE they'll ramp up quality to rival the big boys?

If that's the case they decided to price-point themselves up there with everyone else far before proving any sort of reliability of the same level

I wouldn't have bought a kia then, and my feelings on the matter have not changed....my opinions on Mahindra are the same as my opinions on Kia.
Selling volume and quality as not synonymous, billions of people buy Marlboros, PBR, and McDonalds everyday......although I suspect some people would like to argue the finer points of "quality" in those examples too.

Lots of side by side Kubota and JD vs. Mahindra videos online....I would sooner buy a used Kubota than a new Mahindra.

They've been in Texas since the 90's if memory serves, so they've been around domestically for a while. I wanna say they started making the push upward in the US in the early 201x's, and in the last 5 years they're really looked at as a global player against John Deere. Right now, I'd equate Mahindra to a Kia K900 where John Deere is the Mercedes E Class. Both are $60k cars, one has a perceived luxury reputation, the other is the awkward kid in high school that's just outside of being able to hang out with the cool kids, but people tend to like...and in another 5-10 years, that rejection will probably have forced him in to becoming a doctor and spending 6hrs a day in the gym...or whatever 'success story' analogy you wanna use.

I have a mahindra 4540 and have zero complaints at 100hrs(3 years). There is nothing fancy about it at all. Hi/lo 4 speed with a dual stage clutch. It was a good bit heavier than equal competition. No regen or def like others for 2016. My rhino 272 cutter is too big for it but it doesnt complain.

I thought Ford was going to be in this list since they always claim best selling Pick up.

Couldn't resist, back to your debate, I have never owned a tractor so I have no input other than this to fan any burning embers.......

My pap had a 85 horse Mahindra for about two months before the local dealer took it back. I am sure not all of them are junk, but the one example that we had was a piece of shit.

If I'm not mistaken, Kia is to Hyundai as ford was to mercury. Essentially a lower entry point of a sister type company.

I say that, to explain my distaste for Hyundai. As I remember their breakout US vehicle the Excel. Which was pushed as a car for $4,995. To compete with the $3,995 Yugo

All were absolute shit. But everyone was like "what do you expect for $4,995 "

Still...it took Hyundai years to outgrow the stigma of the excel.

I've somewhat place mahindra in that same category with tractors, as everything I've heard about their tractors seemed to follow that same track the excel did.

I've heard VERY few good things about mahindra for those folks I know that bought one

To-May-toe, to-mah-toe on Kia/Hyundai in my book, I think Hyundai had that ‘high dollar’ equus too. I think 5 years ago, I woulda absolutely 100% agreed with everyone that said they were shit. Having had a couple of their smaller/compact tractors now in the last 5 years (mainly due to the deals and rebates) they’ve done what I ask with no issues. Maybe just got lucky or don’t know what ‘good’ is. But then again, I’m one of those guys that doesn’t know the difference between an Android and an iPhone...so my tractor requirements are 1) does it run 2) does it move dirt 3) can it turn a field.

Back to the Look like a Jeep, well so does the Roxor, though it's not full size. Every manufacturer has been copying each other for years, now. Don't hear much Stink over it. Willys [I guess] gave away the flat fender patent, to India or some other Country, Years back. May still be making them! Same with the Beetle. US market dropped it, but Mexico happily built them for Mexico & Cuba.

Regarding tractors ...look at LS and give me your thoughts....

When purchasing for me, I was extremely price sensitive, LS was definitely on the list. For what I was looking at price difference was negligible (like $31k vs $34k before the rebates/discounts), but a lot of bang for the buck with LS, and frankly couldn’t find much negative online. For me, came down to the closest LS dealer was 50miles away at the time, vs 3 Mahindra from 3-20miles away. If there woulda been an LS dealer within 10-20 miles of the house, I woulda gone that route. But I digress, screw them asian bastards trying to copy an American icon such as the Jeep.

I was in India several years ago. Calcutta was crawling with older tata and mahindra jeeps.
They might of copied Willy’s in the beginning , but they’ve taken the style and ran with it. There were all kinds of jeepish trucks and crew cabs, diesels etc..Would be cool to import some of them here. I’m sure they would be a hit. Wish I had taken more pictures of them.

Our experience has been pretty good with our Mahindra. Its slower than a seven year itch (my old '49 8N puts it to shame speed wise), but its plenty capable and 4x4 works well.

Sums it up well IMHO.

(don't forget Mahindra holds rights to cj-esque stuff) I do know fca griped about the roxor grill but they resolved that afaik.
You are correct, sir (using the term loosely)

Mahindra has a license to build CJ type Jeeps

haters gonna hate...
We are on our second KIA and my oldest has her first...good vehicles imho...
Any company that gives them nip bastards a run for their money has my blessings.
