So what say you?
I personally love 22lr. It's cheap, reliable and accurate.
Some say it has no knock down power. In real life almost nothing does. I think a hole through your body makes one change his mind.
22lr is easy to find and I think its a great hunting/ prepping round. Even for newbies to shooting it has little recoil and is easy to keep on target. It's great for squirrel's as well as large game when placed properly.

This is a joke, right?

In before everyone poo-paahs it.

My wife has basically, rheumatoid arthritis. (It's not, but people usually recognize that before Ankylosing Spondylitis). She can't rack a Glock 44 in .22. Which sucks, because she shoots the best with it. So until recently, her go gun has been a Bersa Thunder in .22 that decided to start malfunctioning... Now it's back to a Ruger Mark series gun because she loves it. It's in .22 rimfire.

No, it's not ideal.

Ideal would be carrying the biggest gun you can in the biggest caliber you can that you can accurately shoot with.

Sometimes that's just a .22.

But anything is better than nothing. And I'd rather have a .22 than a pointy stick.

Valid point... but what about something like the shield ez380? Or a tip barrel Baretta. Or a revolver?

I wouldn't want to get shot by anything. A .22 will enter and bounce around and do all kinds of damage, and probably kill you later.

For home defense why not a shotgun? If it won't stop a deer, why would you trust it to stop a person.
Yes if well placed it could do some damage, but how good of a marksman would you really be during a home invasion?

Talk to cops or read some police reports. Plenty of people have been shot several times and still were a threat.

There is a difference between death from a particular round and stopped by. The key is stopping someone before they get you.

Mark IV with threaded barrel and ISIS suppressor is ideal for base of the head type execution. Place mark on their knees and have them touch their chin to their chest. Using a Eley subsonic round the bullet will not exit the skull, but rather bounce around inside turning the brain to vegetable soup.

If THIS is what you mean by "defense" I can understand. However, fighting off an aggressor, then no.

This. While I have .22s in my home, it's not the go to for defense unless nothing else is accessible (can't foresee this being the case but stated anyways).

Might work, but my wife is very 'recoil shy' and hates shooting a 9mm so I doubt a .380 would be much better. I've considered buying her a Keltec PMR30 in .22 magnum to try out - but haven't yet.

.22mag is a fun little round. My .22 wmr wheel gun has zero recoil so it may be a good option for her.

Having a hand cannon is cool, but if you can’t handle it or shoot it accurately it’s no good in my opinion. I’ve got a fair amount of experience shooting within structures and buildings. It’s different. Most of your engagements are close. Some really close. It’s louder and more chaotic. Look around your house. Most engagements are probably 20ft or less. Then you’ve got to think about what’s behind the threat. Is it your kids bedroom? I get it, .22 is not ideal but I’ve seen 5.56 and .308 not stop dudes either. If .22 is what she’s comfortable with, let her get good with putting together multiple round strings. Put her at the 3-5 meter line and have her work on stacking 5–7 rounds in a 3” circle. Build up her speed as she gets more accurate. Several quick rounds of .22 to the face and chest will stop somebody.

I started my wife with a Walther P22 then handed her a PK380. Same controls, just 25% bigger.

^^this.
Been shot. It sucks. Multiple small caliber rounds from a confident shooter are better than a single poorly placed large caliber shot from a poor shooter.

and to quote “the Jesus” “I pull the trigger till it goes click.”

I just picked up some 100 grain 38 special bullets to hand load for the wife. I load the powder light too so this combination has very little recoil. Practice with the light loads then put full power stuff in for the predators. With the extra adrenaline, she'll never notice the difference. Just a word of warning, don't shoot a poplar tree with light loads and bare knuckles.....bare knuckles bleed when they catch the ricochet!

I’m in the camp of something is better than nothing...a 22 shot to the forehead is more effective than a 38 to the arm. That said, I wouldn’t rely on perfect shot placement when SHTF.

.....good luck finding one of those right now. Also 22mag. will make your ears ring more than the .22.

I used to carry a sig .22. was showing it to my cousin's buddy one night and he popped the mag out and seen the .22 rounds and said wtf is this little shit. I said let me shoot you with it and tell me how it feels. He didn't take me up on my offer. So, I'm with the something is better than nothing crowd.
