So I am moving, heading out with first trip Wednesday morning. From NC-VA-WV-MD-PA-NY-CT-MA. Driving a 1987 Ford F8000 25' box with attic above cab (33' total), 25k GVWR, tagged for 25k, truck is registered in my name, not commercial, covered in private vehicle decals. Truck is partially converted to RV with A/C unit, and some windows, but not tagged as an RV yet.

I have read a bunch of different things from different sites, some show certain states requiring all trucks above 10k to enter stations, some say commercial over 10k, some say 7.5k, some are commercial over 16k. Found some definitive info on state gov websites, but can't find info for all states. AAA has some guidelines, but doesn't have anything concrete for all the states I'm traveling through.

Anyone have any good definitive answers on a private truck under 26k? Roll on by with fingers crossed? Leaning towards entering and letting them make the decision to green me by or scale me.

TIA and Merry Christmas!

Moving from NC to La. for the army I had the biggest box you could get from Penske and my Cherokee on a car trailer behind it. The first station I came to on I-20 WB flashed for me to enter so I did and they waived me. I figured meh, just a fluke of weight and it being a W-I-M. Breezed a the rest in the next couple states and then got pulled for breezing one until I explained I was private and moving myself. Nothing really useful to add I guess but I’d pull in one per state and if they waive you then breeze the rest until you break the next state line. Better to burn a few seconds rolling the scale then umpteen minutes talking to Buford T. Justice.

Western MA, grew up in the Springfield area. Moving to Granville temporarily while house hunting in NH (I don't want to live in MA any longer than I have to). But also just bought a Jeep/offroad shop in Holyoke.
Well I'll be damned... A Yankee actually moving back up north. I thought they only sold one way tickets south up there.

Mostly familiar with NC/SC/Tenn. But my understanding of DOT, is Commercial tags Stop, & anything over 26,000. But Smaller Company trucks, running commercial tags, Wreckers, & Buses, seem to Never stop, & don't Get stopped! If your not over 26K, not commercial, & not towing a trailer, "I" wouldn't stop.
Now, If you see signs that dictate Your vehicle to stop, then Yes, Do.

Agreed, I’d roll on past.

I grew up in Grafton (southeast of Worcester) went to college in North Dartmouth and then lived in the Fairhaven & New Bedford area for a few years before I moved south. Been in NC for the past 18 years & only go back to see family.

Can’t help you on a private truck. When I moved to N.C. I rented the biggest truck you could get from U-
Haul with a car trailer and never stopped at a weigh station. Never has a problem but that was a long time ago.

Good luck & Merry Christmas.

When a yankee moves down and stays they're called "damn" Yankees
When one moves BACK up north,
We call those "good" Yankees (the kind that move back)
If they marry a Democrat while down here and take THEM back too, we call those "DAMN good" Yankees

Lol Thanks My wife and I both are from up there, but neither of us are Dems. We are not happy about moving back to commie new england, but family comes first and all of ours is there. Not looking forward to the cold...

I moved from Texas with a 24-26’ Penske box truck (whatever the big one is) and one of their car trailers. I researched it then and never really found a clear answer either. Mostly found that I didn’t have to go through weigh stations and would get waved through if we did. We weighed the loaded truck/trailer as we headed out since the Army was paying by weight. 29,900 lbs meant we rolled past every weigh station instead of chancing them actually weighing us. No issues from San Antonio to Albemarle. Figured that the hot rod on the trailer made it obvious we weren’t commercial and just rolled.

And when one moves to Florida and then decides to move to the WNC mountains they are called Half Backs.

They don't decide to move to NC...they stop for gas, see how cheap stuff is here, and then start buying it up to make it just like the place they left.

@tlucier My ex GF was from Carver. I went up there with her one time and we passed the exit for Worcester....then she pronounced it and I knew people up there just weren't right in the head. It definitely says Whir-kest-ur...not Wus-ter :D

So I went up and back with the truck Wed-Fri. Went up loaded with most of my shop equipment, scaled it locally before I left at a little over 28k (oops), thankfully every weigh station on the way up was closed. Came back empty today and both stations that were open bypassed me. I probably would have rolled by on the way up if any were open, if they had rolling scales on the entrance they would probably nab me. Gotta make one more trip next week with all my house stuff, but that shouldn't be nearly as heavy!

Thanks!

As long as your not hauling for commerce/ profit, you'll be fine. They may stop you, but should be uneventful.

Good luck with the move!

A 26’ Penske truck does not fit under the drive up deal of a Drury Inn in Beckley WV. Me and a co-worker personally mangled one up real good many years ago after leaving Hooters and going back to our hotel on a work trip.... that’s a good campfire story, with pics for proof!

Nothing useful to add....

My Dad used to say "You know what's a beautiful sight? A car load of yankees, headed back north".
