I've been racing since I was 12 and I run a motocross suspension service out of my home. I have a nice collection of trophies, couple of broken bones, a ton of friends in the industry, and I can fully back myself up on this one. maybe you should take your own advice and not judge me, you don't know me in person either


If you were to say "motor cross" on any mx forum, you would get called a noob. Its motocross. Its sweet you used to race, i'm just surprised you said "motor cross". Anyway I do apologize for calling you out. Roost on
 
If we really want to be picky, Motorcycle Cross Country would be the full name...

If we want to be downright anal, shouldn't they be called ENGINE cycles not motor? :D

So....we have stockish Zuks, XJs and Yota pickups mentioned the most here so far.

To me, a large part of this is going to be engine and I would think a 150ish vs say 4.x or 5.2L v8 (in a ZJ) is going to be hard pressed to keep up?

The reason I am saying this is the high HP is really going to come into play every time you accelerate from 5ish mph to 30 and I would guess that will happen "alot" in the course, building up to a big advantage?

No doubt the lil zuks will do well on the rock crawl but really with no lockers it is all about momentum anyway? Weight is a factor but so is 'force'?

Beater 1/2 ton pickup or blazer would be interesting for the v8 factor, width only matters if you are worried about getting a dent? Remember the point of the thread is a beater rig for VehiCross (See what I did there...heh)

I am going to be racing stock class in a 4.7l WJ

I think I will have a HP advantage for sure, but I think power to weight ratio is what it's really going to be about. With a winch bumper, sliders and 33x12.50's my rig is downright heavy. I'm probably not going to bother taking doors etc. off either.

I definitely will have a raw HP advantage over a zuki/toyota whatever, but I the power/weight ratio vs a stripped out, light rig would be pretty close.

Hmm, guess I shoulda mentioned my whole idea, lol! Okay, here goes: Get one that is solid axle and EFI (IIRC, 85 is the year for both, somebody please correct me if I'm wrong!) 5spd. (Or if swapped on (factory style) EFI is okay for class A, do any year solid axle!) Completely gut it, taking out the window glass, everything, use only the outer skins of the fenders (give it stockish look). Cage it, put in two buckets with harnesses. Fuel call mounted behind rear axle and spare tire same spot (closing in on 50/50 weight distribution). I could be wrong but, seems there is no mention of gutting/cutting being against the rules for class A? So, even the little four banger is gonna be pretty good power (especially if one can find a factory turbo Toy (would it be allowed? it's not a modification!)). Anyways, stock steely rims oughta hold up okay with 33x10.50 R15's! Ought not be too taxing on the stock axles since the tires aren't huge and the weight has been reduced. Oh, the final addition to the truck would of course be the paint job of Ivan "Ironman" Stewarts old racing Toys! :D Hmm, I actually want to build this rig now that I have come up with the idea! But, I can't do it in time for the event, I'm broke!:rolleyes:

Class A = beater CJ5, 258 or 304, 3 spd, 31's. Strong motor, short, wide gear ratio. I could mash any sami/yota in one any day in this comp - EASILY. Torque (pickup) will win this race since its 'stoplight to stoplight' racing. But I could beat that in a 4.0/auto TJ or XJ as well. IT will get your hands off the shifter since you will be steering like mad. Too bad I think that all this is a bad idea... (at URE anyway)

Seems like a fun weekend to me! I talked to my GF and she agreed that we'd like to come up and watch all of this (May 9-11 right?)! I won't have anything to enter so, just spectating. I've seen all the posts about entry fees for racers and all but, how much is the charge to be a spectator? Thanks!:D

I think the weekend pass is like $35. It gets you access to the race, the vendor area, and maybe a few other things. I think it is on the website.

Thanks! Sorry, I hadn't come across it. I'm looking forward to going, looks like it'll be a lot of fun! It'll actually be the first time I've gone to a big 4x4 event. :D I hope everything goes smoothly for y'all, seems like quite an organizational challenge! :popcorn: I'd like to build something to compete in an amateur event like the lower classes y'all are offering, I think it's a neat idea!

Some pretty sweet ideas people are coming up with in this thread, it'd be sweet if there's this much variety in the racers!

I do have a question though, if somebody had a truggy (say like a Formula Toy type o thing) that has stock drivetrain, 33's, stock style suspension, and open/open, could it compete class A? Is there any limit to body mods? Seems like something such as that could do quite well!:driver: (Yup, I'm a web-wheeling bench racer! (I still have yet to combine my Jimmy and my parts pile into one entity, DOH!:rolleyes:))
