are the 6.0's any good? What's the good and bad?

Good.... They are cheap to buy
Bad.... They are expensive to replace the head gasket, egr deletes etc etc about $5k worth.

How dependable? What should I look for?

6.0 s just have so many problems from head gaskets to hp oil pumps to sand in the blocks, fuel tank liners deteriorating list goes on and on. I've seen some last and seen a bunch not. I'd stick to a 7.3 or cummins

6.0 are great trucks after about 5k of shop bills. They're honestly great stock if they haven't been hotroded
They were horrific stock. Ford shops had a huge overload of them breaking left and right. Just horrible, horrible engines.

The 7.3's were kind of that way in the beginning. They broke all the time, too. Not as bad as the 6.0's, but pretty bad. Ford kept at it, and got them right.....and then decided to dump them for the 6.0. Never really got them right before they (mercifully) replaced them.

They can make a lot of power, but they just are not reliable.

Yes, never had a diesel before. I read about them, but figured I'd ask you guys.
I am buying one now... For me its simple math...
7.3 4dr swb 4wd with less than 200k are going for $18-22k
Same truck with 6.0 and 6 years newer, $12-13... Do the work for $5k and still have less in a 6 year newer truck

To expand on Snappy's post.
This is what I told a guy a while back.
8 year old Duramax/Cummins trucks bring $20k.
An 8 year old 6.0 will bring $13ish.

For ~$8k you can have a brand new Ford engine with a 100k mile warranty.
So for the same money...and the Ford is a much better truck than either of the other 2.

I bought a 6.0 last summer for same reason stated above. I bought nice 04 for less than 11k with 150k miles. Went ahead and spent money doing head studs, egr delete, hpop, oil cooler etc. Been driving and towing with it for over a year now and knock on wood no problems. I still have less money in it then other brands same year model and I don't think you can beat the ford crew cab. Most spacious truck out there. Much happier with it than I was with my old 12 valve dodge.

I would say to just be patient and find a good deal on one. Don't go pay 16-18k for one and have the 5k ready if u need it.

If you like the Ford's interior and ride I'd say go for it. Buddy of mine picked up an 6.0 f350 flatbed with blown head gasket for $4000. Dumped a bunch of money into it and now has a nice truck for a lot cheaper than he could buy a used 3rd gen dodge or Chevrolet for.

I wouldn't trade my 07 dodge for a 6.0. A lot of people trash the dodges but I like the way my truck looks inside and out more than the fords. Only issues I've had with it is the front u joints went bad at 30k miles and the radiator started leaking around 85k. However I paid 24k for my truck in 09 with only 18k miles on it.

I would never pay near the prices people are asking for used diesels these days. I would rather buy a nice clean big block gas truck for half the price.

Thanks for all the input guys!

I was in the market for a 6.0 recently. You can find them already bulletproofed on CL. I wouldn't buy one that was not. At the very minimum head studs and EGR delete.

I'd rather buy a stock vehicle. If its already bullet proofed then you have to wonder if it was some flat billers play toy that's thrashed on it constantly.

Shrug or I'll show you a 6.0 with w 250know miles with stock head bolts, turbo, and EGR/oil cooler

Don't beleven everything you read.

I'm actually in the market for a diesel truck, either duramax or powerstroke with either a service body or cab and chassis. I've noticed the price on those trucks are slightly less because of lower demand from flatbill shoppers than a comparable mile/condition srw, cc. I'm not beyond buying a 6.0 Ford. I know the importance of maintenance and will he using a truck to do truck things. I'll be tuned in for further info on this.

I have a 2003 Excursion with the 6.0, it has just over 230k and AFAIK it has never had headgaskets. I bought it with around 190k on it, has been a great vehicle. Granted I HAVE spent some $$ on it, but I agree with others here, I'd rather buy a $9k vehicle that was in VERY nice shape and ran great, spend some $$ on it, and have one that is 'upgraded' as I spend $$ to replace parts. My brother-in-law recently bought a 2000 Excursion with the 7.3 for about $14k. I can promise the 6.0 will run circles around it.

Stuff I have done:
Upgraded to 05'-07' suspension/axles
front mount oil cooler
remote oil filter
EGR delete
4-gauge pod with Isspro gauges (EGT, boost, fuel pressure, trans temp)
4" turbo-back exhaust with muffler (I hate straight piped ones)
new 155cc injectors
SCT tuner
and some cosmetic stuff (front bumper, grille, etc)
Including all the above I have less than $13k in it (I really don't know what I have in it)

It DOES currently need headgaskets/studs. That will put me out about $3k. I installed everything else myself but I will have the headgaskets/studs done by a local guy.

I have no regrets buying a 6.0, BUT you have got to plan on spending some $$ on it, but NO vehicle is bulletproof, they all have issues.

I've had them all starting with '02 7.3 ps, '01 5.9 cummins, '05 5.9 cummins, '06 lbz dmax, 2-'08 lmm dmax, and most currently have an '05 6.0 ps and an '08 6.4 ps. All these but the 7.3 were deleted and tuned. All the big 3 have their pros and cons. Me personally have vowed to never purchase a new truck again, there fore my current 2 trucks have a combined 390,000 miles but I have gone through them both. I will forever maintain my own junk now, therefore cost of parts is my biggest draw to ford. Best example- injectors; 08 lmm-$500 versus 08 & 06 ps-$200 for a total difference of $3400- advantage ford....not to mention I had a $800+ monthly payment on the chevy for 5 years, ending with 235,000 miles and replacing the motor at 150,000. If the ford cost me 500 a month to keep on the road I'm money ahead. [emoji106]

6.0s are great trucks with a few things done. I got mine cheap because the egr went snd flooded the motor, did a bullet proof myself and 155cc injectors at 160k and other than a few minor things. Now its at 355k on the stock long block trans and rest of the drivetrain. The truck pretty much stayed hooked to a 6ton trailer with a bobcat or toyota until recently.
